Not necessary for street driving. If you do spirited drives all the time, it's a necessity...

Another happy owner of the JR Supercharger here.
Installed this beauty on the last weekend, now I'm learning to drive again.

I did some testing with Virtual Dyno, just to have some numbers to compare. It does confirm the increase both in power and torque, which I obviously can feel myself. Here are my graphs for stock BRZ and after supercharger installation:

I found the graphs for the stock car are pretty close to reality - I've seen very similar results from a real DynoJet on the forums. After the upgrade I see the increase both for power and torque, but only for about 30%, which seems quite low (the numbers claimed by the manufacturer are 50% increase in HP and 45% in torque).

Of course these are "virtual" numbers, and they may be way off. So I'd like to check with other owners. Anybody used VD with this kit? What "virtual" numbers do you get?

What should I check to make sure I'm not losing power anywhere? I guess the first most obvious thing to check would be the air leaks on the way from intake to the engine. What else?

@alpax, are you using Canadian 94 octane gas? That could be one of the issue of power loss..

Yes, I still had a half-tank of 94 from Chevron. Is it so bad to run on 94?
I know the CARB tune is for 91, but it was mentioned it adjusts to the higher octane, and I thought 94 should not hurt. The manufacturer actually recommends 100 octane for track, but that's a different thing of course.

There's something funky about the 94 up here. I've heard some positive responses, but most show a decrease in power (or an increase in knock) vs even 91. The only way to know for sure is to do some data logging as you just can't trust the number plate on the pump.

Is that 94 AKI or RON?

As we are talking about Canada, I guess that's 94 AKI.

Actually I heard mostly positive comments about Chevron 94.

Well, now I've got full tank of 91 - we'll see how it goes. Probably will visit that section of a highway again tonight.

are you using the carb tune? I did virtual dyno when i had the carb tune, and your making a little bit more power than me. I made around 210 on virtual dyno.

Yes, I see you mentioned 212 hp a couple weeks ago. So seems like my numbers are normal.

I've noticed that now the car is a bit more sluggish at the lower RPMs. After a slow turn in a 2nd gear it doesn't move at all, and pressing the gas does almost nothing. I guess it's the added load of the supercharger, which needs power for its operation, and at the lower RPMs it doesn't yet give enough boost to counter that.
Do you guys see an impact at the low RPMs (around 2000)?

I doubt that it's parasitic drag from the supercharger causing it to stumble at low RPM. The supercharger will spin quite easily when it's not doing any work, just like an alternator spins freely when there's no load on it. The power soaked up by the supercharger will increase as the load on it increases.

At idle it will be nearly nothing, and at redline (peak boost) it will be a lot.

That's just called 2000 RPMs. All cars are sluggish at that RPM.

Try driving a non-boosted FRS/BRZ. Perhaps you're just used to having a lot more power, so "normal" power feels a lot slower now.
