Exactly. Wait until you are up to that level and have coils then get it corner balanced. Not sure what exactly you saw but often times racers add weight due to class requirements (you can't be under a certain weight).

You'll be just fine if you're used to a LS3. Remember, even with that power, you still have less torque than the LS3 did.

You'll never boil fluid in an autox, BUT better fluid can give you much better pedal feel and modulation.

This thread seems to be the biggest and most hit. SO maybe it is a good place to ask

Hello,

New here. I haven't bought my 86 car yet. I am planning to hopefully this winter.

I am a noob and never tracked before but I am really interested and want to go. I have been into cars for a long time, but have never driven on a closed circuit road coarse track.

I am also not rich and am more of a broke part time and low wage type of person. So I want to track the car the very cheapest I could, which would be almost all stock.

What should I buy first with my very limited budget? And also what should I buy after my first couple of times?

Since I am poor, it will obviously be almost all stock and I just need the essential things.

Should I buy these first? (these are the things I've researched that are commonly mandatory)
Helmet
Tires (on stock wheels)..which size? 215 or 225?
Brake Pads
Fluid

.......anything else that I need that is a track priority for a noob?

Should I get any suspension parts and modifications?

Since it's your first time at the track, you should be completely fine going 100% stock. From then on brake pads, fluid, and some decent tires would be a nice add on. Also, some groups such as extremespeed offer helmet rentals, so that could save you some cash, assuming you aren't going to track too often.

Thanks. 100% stock sounds perfect for me

I will end up replacing the stock tires sooner or later since it's a wear and tear item and I will eventually be getting better tires.

What tire size should I go with on the stock wheels? 215 or 225?
I would most likely get extreme performance street tires by dunlop, advan or hankook.

My past cars were all lowered. One on kgmm springs and koni shocks (S13 hatchback), and the other with ground control coilover sleeves and koni (EG hatchback). The S13 was on Z1 SS and EG was on Kumho 712.

I would like to lower my new 86 too with lowering springs mainly for appearance, but if it helps performance too even better. Would the lowering springs on stock shocks actually help at the track, or would it hurt its performance on the track compared to totally bone stock?

Which pads and fluid should I get later on?
Both of my older cars had Porterfield hybrid street pads. They dusted my wheels and rocker panels too fast and too much, and I dont wanna use hybrid or performance pads on the street anymore. Because of this, I would like to just use stock oem pads for the street, and then swap to track performance pads for track days.

What are a good but inexpensive helmet?

Anything else?

Edit:
Just found this thread and it looks like it''ll answer most of my questions and then some

I found a g force eliminator helmet used on craiglist for $150 it was used only once. I suggest trying to find one on CL or close out deals first. Motorcycle helmets will also work on a pinch it's usually cheaper too.

May I also suggest you try out autox. It will teach you a lot about your cars limit and what to do.

Many track day organizations don't allow the use of motorcycle helmets so be aware.

Also, be really careful about used helmets. Even if it was only used once, you don't know that it hasn't been banged around a bunch in someone's closet (one of the modes of a helmet protecting your head is through preferential cracking/destruction of the foam). A drop from three or four feet to a hard surface may be sufficient to render a helmet insufficient for use; any such impact should require an inspection by a qualified person as the damage may not be apparent to the untrained.

If you do decide to get a used helmet you also need to check the manufacturing date as the shell materials tend to become brittle over time and may no longer retain form and function after the first impact (SA helmets are required to survive repeated impacts against a hard surface (ie roll bar) and also be fire resistant, unlike motorcycle helmets). I believe that the rule is five years but I am not certain on that.

ABSOLUTE one thing? Brake fluid.

Pads second

You can rent a helmet; get your own head sock.

We typically use them to fine tune balance. Stock class AutoX cars use them as a hack to alter handling within the rules.

Thxs.

Any favorite brand and type for fluid and pads for the track days?

And for tires on stock wheels, 215 or 225?

I will most likely get a used 86 car and the tires will probably be need to be replaced soon if its stil on the stock Primacys
