Smart Key Question (BRZ Limited Owners)

How does the trunk work, does it have a button above the license plate you push to open or do you still have to take the key fob out of your pocket and push a button on it?

Assuming your valet button in the trunk isn't engaged. In which case you need to use the key inside your fob to open the trunk.

I have a question as well about the same thing,

Does the button on the trunk only work for you guys if the key is in close proximity? For me I can only open the trunk if the key is in my pocket or hand etc when going to open the trunk. Say the car is unlocked or even if I leave the key fob in the car the trunk won't open unless I press the button to open the trunk on the dash or grab the key and get it closer to the trunk

That's how it's supposed to work. RTM as it describes the functionality.

Quick question, what about the passenger door unlock? I can get into the driver door with my keys in my pocket, but it never unlocks the passenger door also.

Is that normal?

Normal. You can set it to unlock both doors upon unlocking driver's door. The sequence is in the manual.

^^^ THIS. One of the first things I tweaked on my BRZ.
My question is, how far away can I drive the car from my key before the car shuts off...or does it even shut off at all? I think it's a weird feature that the car stays on when the key is taken out.
You could get in, start the car, then get out and set the key down someplace...get in your car and drive away, and not be able to start your car back up when you got to your destination and shut it off.

I'd imagine there will be a warning notifying you that the key is not present. At least BMW's do this. I've never tested it though, so I could be wrong.

Yes, normal, and it's a security feature I prefer to keep rather than unlocking everything at once. passengers can wait til I push the unlock. If I really want to unlock both doors from a distance, I'll use the keyfob and push unlock twice.

If you approach the passenger door and attempt to open it first, it will unlock, and it will also unlock the driver's side.

If you unlock the driver's side first, the passenger side will stay locked. This is to keep you from being carjacked by someone waiting for your doors to unlock so they can jump in from the other side. As has been said, you can turn that feature off so that it unlocks both doors from either side.

It does not shut off. That's a safety feature. If it shut off when it doesn't detect the key fob, it could potentially shut off while you're driving it if your battery went dead or your key fob were defective. That could be an unpleasant surprise.

The car will let you drive without the key until you shut it off. Then it won't restart.

Yes you can, but the car will beep at you a bit if it detects you leaving the car with it running.

As to why it does this, if the battery in the key fob dies, you wouldn't be able to drive the car. If it dies you need to hold the fob up to the start button so it can pick up the passive RFID chip in the fob.

Makes sense. But it's still definitely strange.
