This. Changing the oil at 100 miles or 1000 miles or whatever is nonsense. You have a reasonable size oil sump and you have a filter. There is no reason to do break-in oil changes. If it is small enough to get through the filter, it is small enough to not cause issues in the bearings.

As far as break-in, I generally tried to keep the revs down, but I'd be lying if I said that I never hit 5500 or so in that first 1000 miles. I wouldn't recommend beating the hell out of the car the first 1000 miles but I also wouldn't recommend completely babying it. Let the car warm up before you push the revs up and spiritedly rev through the lower range.

I'm definitely listening to you guys though. So oil change after 5k miles or 3k miles? I read the brz manual and that said after 3k.

Here's what it says in the brz manual:

New vehicle break-in driving (the first 1000 miles [1600 km])
The performance and long life of your vehicle are dependent on how you
handle and care for your vehicle while it is new. Follow these instructions
during the first 1000 miles (1600 km):

Do not allow the engine speed to exceed 4000 rpm except in an emergency.
Do not drive at one constant engine or vehicle speed for a long time,
either fast or slow.
Avoid starting suddenly and rapid acceleration, except in an emergency.
Avoid hard braking, except in an emergency.
The same break-in procedures should be applied to an overhauled
engine, newly mounted engine or when brake pads or brake linings are
replaced with new ones.

Changing your oil after 20 miles is the most ridicules thing I have ever heard! Like was said above the filter takes care of any particles. Don't even want to go down the road of the quote "You want to flush that stuff out before it gets recycled and embedded in the transmission gears, and oil pump etc..."! Man, if you have engine oil in your "transmission gears" you have WAAAAAY bigger issues than an oil change!
As said before follow the manual for break in and change the oil at the manufacturer recommended intervals.
You have owned a car before right?
And for god's sake do not take every piece of info on the net as truth ( including mine as I could be wrong too) or you are SCREWED! If you really, REALLY are not sure ask the service guys at your dealership (unlike what some people say they are NOT all out to screw you over and really do know the cars)

I've owned pre-owned cars before, but never a new one and I know the break-in period is the most crucial part of a car's life.

Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on it since I've read a lot on breaking in a car and it's such a controversal topic.

I'm going to baby this car so I want to make sure I do every step the right way.

Oh and I'll be asking my dealership a ton of questions, I already have haha. These forums are definitely more knowledgeable than the guys at my dealership, especially for break-in period.

Gotcha! The simple answer is do what the manufacturer tells you. Just skip all the internet hype and it will be just fine. There are loads of "facts" and plenty of "experts" out there but the ones I trust the most are the guys that made the car. Don't know where you found the info in your post but DAMN that is some weird shit! According to the 20 mile thing I was done before I even got the car as it had 60 miles on it when I bought it!!!!!!!!


NEVER think these forums are "more knowledgeable" as many (again including me) can give horrible advice because it is what THEY believe to be the right thing and as much as we all like to think we are right it doesn't make it true!

A couple guys in that thread on these forums recommended that guide.

When I get the car, I'm planning to spend a whole night reading the manual.

But there's not really any harm in changing the oil during break-in, plus it's a one time thing. Worst case scenario, you paid for an extra oil change ONCE.

True but not REQUIRED and most certainly not after 20 or even 100 miles. Just pouring money down the drain at that point.

At first my Scion dealer was only getting one. Now they are getting three. I am getting a call as soon as the come off the truck.

Wonder how many dealers there are in North America? If loads the 1500 cars made won't get spread around very well if some dealers get 3 or 4.
