you can always call the insurance and say you're thinking about getting a car and putting vinyl on it. maybe they wont ask for your policy number or anything like that... and being pulled over with it and the police is giving you trouble you can show him/her the door jams with the original paint on it

OK, so I spoke with an OPP acquaintance/neighbor on the subject of colour change and this is his take on the subject. Like many government officials you can probably ask 6 different ones and get six different answers but this at least sounds realistic:
There is no fine/ticket for having the wrong colour on your documents. The only fine is if you have the incorrect current address on them. If the wrong colour IS recorded they will notify the MTO of the discrepancy. The MTO will take action as per sections 5.3(1) to (4) of the Highway Traffic Act (excerpts below). So technically you have 60 days from getting caught to fix it (either go back to proper colour and tell the MTO you did or change the colour on record with them) without penalty. BUT... He followed up that comment with the statement "if you pissed off the officer there is always SOMTHING they can ticket for". It should not come as a surprise to anybody that with the computers in the cruisers they know everything there is to know about the car and registered owner before they even pull you over. So if they come up behind you, punch up your plate number and it says white but your car is pink with purple polka dots they are very likely to check you out. We were chatting in his laneway so I asked for an example of what "something" he could ticket me for. He said if he wanted to he could ticket me for the tint on my windows, the noise from my exhaust (TRD) and could require me to have an inspection done to ensure my lowering springs (also TRD) were compliant. The fact all these things came on the car from the dealer mean nothing under the Act or the police as they are still changes to the car as built! In summary if you change the colour even with temporary wrap/dip take the few minutes to change the registration and save yourself some possibly major headaches down the road (and/or ALWAYS be real nice and polite when you get pulled over)! Excerpt from Ontario Highway Traffic Act Cancellation of permit, licence where information on permit, licence is incorrect 5.3 (1) The Minister may cancel a vehicle permit or driver’s licence if the Minister is satisfied that any information appearing on the vehicle permit or driver’s licence is incorrect. 2008, c. 17, s. 30. Notice to holder (2) Before taking any action under subsection (1), the Minister shall mail notice of his or her intention to cancel the vehicle permit or driver’s licence to the holder of the permit or licence at the last known address of the holder on the records of the Ministry, stating that the holder has 60 days from the date of the notice to provide the Minister with the correct information. 2008, c. 17, s. 30. Holder to provide correct information (3) The Minister shall not take the proposed action under subsection (1) if the holder of the vehicle permit or driver’s licence provides the Minister with revised information in the form and manner required by the Minister within 60 days after the date of the notice under subsection (2) and the Minister is satisfied that the revised information is correct. 2008, c. 17, s. 30. Holder fails to provide correct information (4) If the holder fails to provide the correct information as required under subsection (3), the Minister may take the action proposed under subsection (1), but not earlier than 60 days after the date of the notice, and the Minister shall mail notice of the action taken to the holder at the last known address of the holder on the records of the Ministry. 2008, c. 17, s. 30. |

t coat is so right. if your nice you stand a better chance of them not getting real picky and finding things to ticket you for. I got pulled over for running a red and it escalated to having to blow the breathalizer, getting a body and complete car search and a raft of fines. I did not run the red so I told them to f off and the fun went from there. I try to avoid cops and keep the car stock so they wont pull me over. I have a colourful past !!

They use the "sufficient to obscure the view (to the cop) of the driver", which means in the opinion of the officer, even the factory tint is subject to a ticket, as the degree of obscurement is not specified. The O.P.P. who are financed by the left wing loonie provincial gov't and get all the best equipment, full auto M-16 shorties and ceramic heavy rifle proof vests in every cruiser etc. (traffic cops as SWAT !), have even been issued light meters for testing to enforce window tint laws. A typical gov't waste of tax mony as the meters are not needed according to our law. I've gone through spot checks and had tint etc. ignored. The cops on RIDE detail are there only for one purpose - to sniff drivers breaths, the safety check nonsense is a sham. The cops need to maximize their time on that detail to get as many impaired charges as possible due to the pressure from quotas, so they always go after the big fish first. The O.P.P even have RAMP details where the stand on an off ramp red light to look at drivers to give them seat belt tickets only. They don't do nada until they see a no belt (the months quota for seat belt tickees has to be met !) In the old days RIDE would look at my papers, my car, signals, horn, etc. Now (after supreme court ruling and law changes) they just stick their nose in my face to sniff, ask if I had anything to drink, then wave me on after I give them a face full of Cohiba smoke (better than bad breath). In the GTA the traffic squads of old are long gone due to budget constraints but like the O.P.P. but on a smaller scale, they do have special traffic officers that work with both the Ministry Of The Environment and the Dept. Of Transport. These officers look for unsafe, smoky junkers and customized cars then send them to the D.O.T. safety lanes or M.O.E. for inspection, taking the plates pending repair, charges etc. I remember when the O.P.P. harrassed the Cayuga area due to all the catless etc. cars in the area due to the track. They set up an inspection station on the highway on the way to the track, pulled cars over and read obd ports for a non stock map or cel etc. and pull the plates at the side of the road. There are very few of those assignments in the GTA, but the O.P.P. Rangers and special traffic officers out in the province are much more numerous. A reasonable cop has better things to do than window tint etc. but if he get's pissed at your he can ruin your day even if he has bigger fish to fry with a simple ticket that sends you for inspection. (At least you will have a couple of days to convert your car to stock). It pays to be polite to the po po and be careful what you say. Metro cops wear recorders on them for public encounters, and the cruisers have cameras. (If the cruiser pulls in front of you, be careful, the officer wants to do something not captured on video). ![]() ![]() CERBERUS |

in the old days cars had vinyl roofs and they caused rust. does this vinyl wrap trap moisture? I don't tint my windows so they can see in to know an old guy is driving and hopefully they don't pull me over. I registered the car and plates in my company name so they don't know until they pull me over who is driving.once you have spent too much time spread eagled on car hoods or the ground you will do nothing that attracts attention.
I always chuckle when I see the lowered cars with loud pipes or other attention getting add ons. |
