That means breaking from the unsuccessful image of the recent past, and that includes the celica.
Yup, I agree with you on that one. I'm pretty sure no body care, but if they name it "Celica" I'll be pissed.

I stand by my prediction, but we'll see what happens.

Keep in mind that at the end of the day Toyota needs to sell the car to more than just a few dedicated car geeks and boy racers.

It's probably going to get labled "Impreza" for Subaru amd "Celica" for Toyota because these are reasonable choices based on name recongition for the manufacturer.

Even though the names may seem to describe different vehicles, they will still attract more buyers than they will turn off.

Does no one remember what the LeMans was in the 70's as compared to the car that bore the name in the 90's?

vs.

I don't even want to get into the many iterations of the Mustang... some were just beyond embarassing.

Also note that by this rationale, the Celica would have never become a FF... but it did.

Toyota has had three dedicated sporty/sports cars: The MR2 (not gonna work), the Supra (secretly a high powered Celica, at least initially), and the Celica. Of the three nameplates, Celica fits the best, and will appeal to more people than a totally new name.

Hell, if they're smart, they'll offer a super high power variant and call it the Supra

Moving on as everyone already knows where I stand on the name thing.

I'm actually a little concerned about the "best in the world for drifting" comment. They said they aren't going with a 50/50 weight distribution to make it easier to induce oversteer thus making this car easier to drift. Also the car is supposed to cost somewhere near $20k usd which is well within reach for most 16-20 year olds. Is it really smart to make a car that from the factory naturally wants to oversteer available to a lot of relatively inexperienced drivers?

I mean the last thing we need is a bunch of teenagers trying to dorifto around every corner and crashing into trees. Next thing you know parents are suing Toyota saying the car was unsafe from the factory because it was too easy to kick the tale out. If the car gets mis-labled as unsafe due to operator error it may scare off toyota (or any other manufacturer) from producing these type of lightweight RWD driftable cars.

It's already happening over on the genesis coupe forums. There are tons of threads about how member x totaled his brand new coupe because he was trying to take a turn at too high a rate of speed and lost control. They always claim that they weren't doing anything they hadn't done on the same road before in their FF sport coupe. Granted it's not the cars fault and a driver mod is desperately needed in these cases but that doesn't matter to the insurance companies and general public oppinion.

I'm just saying making this car the best in the world for drifting could come back to bite Toyota in the butt. What do you guys think?

I think drifting is a waste of good tires. That being said I do believe that young ones will be able to get their hands on this car if its in the low 20s. Its fine tho. I just have to worry about my driving over theirs. There WILL be alot of accidents.

Its called snagging a bunch of crap tires out at the dump bin at the local Goodyear/Firestone auto repair center.

And if you think drifting is a waste of any tire, then you've probably never actually done it before.

put the joke on the side. D1 is pretty fun. I think it's more fun to watch than NASCAR (no offense to any NASCAR fans).

o man i want to know witch one is your friends signature? yes they are all D1 drivers.

for me drifting is just learning car control thats why i did it never really considered it as a motor sports cuz, it was up to the judge who wins but its sure is fun to do. people who say its a waste of time wait till your in a situation when your skills on car control depended on it. its like a swiss army knife you dont know when you'll need it, but when you do you'll be glad you know how.
