That is not a smidge faster. It is much faster. You just described a 2ZZ swapped MR2 Spyder, which is as fast as a base 981 Boxster, which I guarantee is a lot faster than an FRS.

The Miata will come with 150hp at best, IMO. They wouldn't give it the 2L engine.

I'm confused how you can think 180hp in 2200lb (12.2lb/hp) is as fast as 265hp in 2900lb (11lb/hp). That's as big of a difference as there is between an FRS (13.5lb/hp) and a 180hp 2200lb car (which, as I just mentioned, is 12.2lb/hp). The higher horsepower car will get a bigger advantage at high speeds too.

As for this Miata? I like the new design. I'll be very curious to see (and test drive) one in person...

I was fudging it a little, I was taking the 2ZZ to have 190hp and the Boxster to weigh more like 2980 (I always got the impression that Porsche's curb weights were quoted a bit low compared to Toyota at least based on what people weigh their cars to be, near base speced Porsche Boxsters seem to clock in at 3000lbs according to owners on Rennlist).

What can't be fudged though is the 0-60 time (I think traction isn't that big of an issue for any of these cars, I know the 981 can't spin its tires at a stop unless you do a huge clutch dump on an MT), the 981 does 0-60 in a bit under 5.5 sec, whereas the FRS will take 7 sec (and I think back when they first reviewed it they were getting 7.0s with big clutch dumps). 2ZZ Spyders can match the 0-60 of a 981. Even taking out a hypothetical traction advantage and then some, 6s vs 7s is a pretty solid difference.

To be fair, I'm using numbers from a close to base spec manual, since that's how I'd get the car. If you look at a well-equipped PDK, it's a lot closer to 3klb (or more).

Yea I know, but I noticed MT owners also not getting under 3000 lbs. Pretty sure their curb weight is measured with something like a half tank of fuel instead of 75-80%, maybe minus a couple other things.

The power seats that most people opt for don't help, they are heavy as s***. I didn't notice a single person with a totally base car, but I remember thinking based on reading a thread that a realistic weight for a totally base Cayman MT with 18" wheels and 2 way seats is 2950-3000, not 2890. I recall some people had 3200+ lbs Caymans thanks to their 20" wheels, 18-way heated vented seats, PASM, PDK etc.

If that indeed is the engine the turbo swaps will be mundo easy! It reminds of GM's Kappa Platform's turbo placement...

Based on my ridealong in a 1.6L NA, <2,300 lbs and >150 horses will be a hoot, my money is on a retuned version of their current 2.0L (155 horses as stated above), with a sacrifice to fuel economy I'm guessing they can hop it up a bit push into high 160's and still match the Toyobaru's fuel economy.

Worth noting that 2.0L already has 150 ft-lbs of torque, if they don't lose that the Miata will certainly give the 86 a run for it's money when it comes to the butt dyno.

Would be a laugh if true, wonder why they would do that... Mazda trollin' hard with a 'reveal' that was not any better than a press release, Duran Duran and fake turbo mules and videos.

I've never been a fan honestly, including the way it drives, but I know I'm of a minority opinion.

I will say I like the looks of this one better. It finally doesn't look like a rolling bathtub.

It will probably be a great car if its your thing. MomHawk would probably like it (not because she's female, but because she likes convertibles more than I do).

I liked the redesign, it was about time. The whole "if it ain't broke don't fix it" only applies half the time. Every time I would pass a miata I wouldn't look twice, but now it's on the map. This will definitely attract more buyers, and it seems to be the first car company to take a jab at the 86
