The people around TN and Import Alliance ( I know I know.. Lol ) are all Anti-AT so I'll constantly get ridiculed, but this car is the only one that has been able to catch my eye in awhile.

As long as you like it, screw them.

Plus, those extra mpg's make for a pretty decent trade off.

Lol OP my only manual transmission experiences haven't been good but it's just a matter of learning. My take on it is if your buying the car for the pure driving experience you might as well opt for the manual. The only experiences with manuals that I've had I bumped my buddy's truck (I was driving) into my other friends headlight and cracked it. I had to drive the manual cus my friend was wasted so he wasn't the greatest teacher lol! I've also drivin a tercel with a terrible clutch that I couldn't stop stalling in. So yea it's nerve wrecking but I think it will be worth it in the long run to get the manual. Cheers!

I'm going to boo and hiss when I see a BRZ/FR-S in a parking lot, walk up to it, and see that it's an automatic. Just like when I see a Miata, Mustang, or Corvette with an automatic. Just how I am.

Nice to know I am not the only psycho-case It is truly a let down when I see a Hi-Po car hindered by an auto.

To others: yes I know that DTC units and certain expensive automatics can offer comperable or superior performance to a manual transmission. I am refering to the tactility, human/vehicle conection, and sensation, which is present in a manual transmission that you simply do not get with an automatic.

As Arky says: feck em.

All the disdain for AT and 'MT till I die' can stay with the willie wavers.

The FRS/BRZ is going to be the car that gives a lot of people who haven't had an affordable sports car to latch on to, the chance to show how 'pure' and 'true' their sports car owning credentials are and how much they 'get it'.

Ignore that lot and enjoy YOUR car :-)

That in itself is reason enough for me to get the AT. I'm just stubborn that way. I guess if I was 20 years old I'd be a "Hipster"

I drove the first car I ever bought off the lot without ever having driven a manual before. I stalled and chugged, and was embarrassed as hell for the next week or so. I thought I had made a terrible mistake. Then it all started to click. I will never buy an automatic again! It makes you feel part of the machine, rather than playing a video game.

Get the manual! You too may feel it's a mistake in the first little bit, but you will not regret it one bit.

First "real" motorcycle I ever bought I did the same thing. Bought a brand new Silverwing GL650 (the 3/4 size Goldwing, not the current scooter) fully loaded and almost dropped it in the dealership parking lot trying to figure out how to ride the bloody thing.

Probably the stupidest thing I ever did, but man did I love that bike. Wish Honda still made a 'Wing that size.

Obviously, not nearly as big a deal with a car learning on the fly, I think most of us learned that way. My Dad handed me the keys to his truck and said, "Go figure out how to drive it".

A long, long time ago my dad taught me how to let out a clutch and get the car rolling by putting the car on a slight incline, pulling up the emergency brake, and then... let off the emergency brake and add a little bit of gas while letting out the clutch pedal (slowly, get the feel of it) the so that the car simply stays put. Let the clutch pedal out a little bit more while adding a little bit more gas and the car will move smoothly away. Do that on a slight incline until you can confidently let the car slide back a couple of feet, catch it, and then move forward. You'll wear out a very little bit of clutch, but you'll get the feel of it quickly.

A tip: on steep hills, use your emergency brake to keep the car still, and when you're ready, use your feet to slowly engage the clutch and gas while you slowly let off the emergency brake. When you get it right the car will simply move ahead without rolling back at all. I can't tell you how much anxiety that little trick has saved me.

That's the way I taught my niece to drive a stick shift and she picked it up in an afternoon.

Like everyone else is telling you... you'll do fine.

i did the exact same thing, a manual tranny can handle a bit of bump and grind at low speeds, just learn quickly and change that tranny fluid when you get it down!

love my 6-speed celica :P wouldnt give her away for the world not even a 86
