Gasoline does not lubricate the fuel pump, rather the reverse, and certainly doesn't lubricate the injectors. This lack of lubrication quality caused serious engineering challenges to makers of fuel injection and fuel pressure systems. This is such common knowledge no expertise is required to understand it. I had used nothing but the highest octane ever when available on
99 volvo S70 Turbo 2003 Passat W8 2011 Camry Se 2013 FR-S If you own the car then why be cheap on it, the dirty gas eventually will haunt your dreams on the long run.

Not worth it. The cost difference between 87 and 91 octane is like $4/tank, and running 87 octane would mean babying the car to avoid knock. If you want a car that runs on 87 octane, buy one that's designed for it.

You can run regular 87 if you want. If the car is stock nothing will happen, even if you race, autox, or run the car out.
The octane ratings don't mean anything for stock cars because the manufacturer has built in safeguards to protect the car from the appliance driving public. The only time octane ratings matter is when you flash tune the car since most tuners don't account for lower octane levels and try to tune the car to get the most HP out of the octane. So lower octane ratings on tuned cars are more likely to experience the badness of knock and timing retarding.

While true that modern engines are programmed not to damage themselves when filled with low octane fuel, performance is very poor with low octane.
Subaru states in the owner's manual that the engine is intended to run on 93 (98 RON) so using 91 is already using low octane fuel for this engine. |

Also, the lower performance is very subjective, 99% of the drivers (both forum and regulars) wouldn't know the difference if the car was filled with 87 vs 91/93. As I stated above you only feel and require higher octane once you are tuned, otherwise it really is optional.

If you're boosted, the consequences are much higher and you're likely to damage something, but N/A it's not going to explode.

Would have to take out a second mortgage to buy 94 in Ontario! Plus burn a 1/2 tank driving to the few places that have it.

I wish people would read the manual. 93 is preferred while 91 is minimum. If an automanufacturer wants to sell volume in the US then selling a car that requires 93 is almost shooting themselves in the foot.
When poor or low octane fuel is used it can creates knock, the knock sensor then relays that to the ECM which retards the timing. As stated the stock tune is conservative, for 91/93 octane. If you run 87 octane you do risk damaging your engine, even on a stock tune. Most people who have had the dealer put 87 in the car get away with it because they drive easy for the break in period. When it comes to engines using fuel which meets the specifications given by the manufacturer is key. In the shipping industry vessels carry fuel samples for 2 years. One reason is if bad fuel is the cause for mechanical failure. I'm not saying we all have to keep samples of the fuel we put in the car, just making a point. Don't be cheap, put at least 91 octane in the car. You bought a "sports" car.
