Without giving the full value I'm paying now (no accidents/over 25/Chatt, TN) USAA quoted that I'd probably be paying about $4 more a month on my current payments. They didn't have the car in the system and the VIN I provided didn't help. Either way $4 is NUTHIN! I don't care if the car has a turbo but I hope the boats bringing it do cause I'm ready!

It's a 2004 STI. The insurance cost takes the value of the vehicle into account among other factors.

The car is worth almost twice as much as an 04 STI, obviously it's going to be more expensive to insure.

My ITR costs 2x what it would cost me to insure a Zanardi NSX.

Value isn't everything when it comes to insurance..

We know that. But it varies from case to case at the discretion of the insurance company and their underwriters, and it's not far-fetched for a brand new sports coupe from Subaru to be more expensive to insure than an eight year-old sedan from that same manufacturer. It's possible that the insurance companies are already taking into account the car's capabilities rather than waiting for there to be claim after claim before they increase the rates.

I don't disagree with that at all, just the point that value mattered more than other factors. Value is certainly part of it but as you've stated and know quite well it's far from the only factor.

My point was that the fact that it's worth more than car X, Y or Z doesn't mean it's automatically going to cost more to insure.

FWIW a friends insurance company quoted him just over 50% what his ITR cost to insure, but of course that's just the fairly worthless quote before any data is available.

Yeah, insurance companies got burned on the WRX when it came to the states because they underestimated it. I'm sure they won't make the same mistake with this car.

Bingo. At that time, Subaru (at least in the U.S.) was known as a boring manufacturer that made AWD cars that were ideal for snowy climates and/or dusty terrain. They didn't anticipate the WRX being what it became, and neither did Subaru. Remember that they had only planned to sell 10,000 WRXs that first year, and they ended up doing over 24,000 instead, well above expectations.

Fast forward to today (ten years later), the insurance companies know what's up, and having "only" 200 hp isn't going to fool them this time.

Agreed with all of this as well.

FWIW I was never debating these points

Are you aware that this is a nonsencially low number? I didn't even know this number was above the state minimum.

Is that like $5k per person per acc? Even so it's still totally useless. When my car was totalled by some crazy douchebag, my hospital bill was $45k, and I was only in the ER for 4 hours. I seriously recommend you increase the medical portion. Of all the clauses, this one is most likely to bankrupt you.

Dude... I work in insurance. Medical payments are not required in any state, hence there is no minimum requirement, and some companies max out at $5,000 or $10,000 anyway, though a few go higher. This is not a coverage meant to cover all of your medical bills -- that is what health insurance is for, as medical payments are typically meant to cover minor things like first aid, chiropractic care, ambulance fees, or, in the event of a big accident requiring hospitalization, your health insurance deductible and/or maximum annual out-of-pocket expense. But if you are flying under the radar and without health insurance, then yes, getting a five-figure medical payment limit (or higher) might be worth considering. But $5,000 is NOT low. I'd bet most people on this forum have that amount or less, maybe even not at all.

EDIT: You might be thinking of the BODILY INJURY LIABILITY LIMIT, which I put was $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident in the quotes I listed... though I have a $1.5 million limit on my existing policy ($500,000 combined single limit plus a $1 million umbrella). That is something completely different from medical payments.
