So I still hope good pads and cooling will help me skip the BBK expense.
From everything I've heard, that stock brakes are plenty big for the car as long as you put in race or endurance pads.

That said though, you will be replacing pads and rotors at a painful rate; those endurance pads for the stock backing plate are not cheap (DS1.11 are ~$250 for the fronts vs. sprint kit at $185). I'd hate to be replacing those even faster than I do with the sprint kit.

My advice is definitely to use real figures and calculate a racing budget for the year to decide what events you will be attending.
Class can definitely make a difference in overall expense, notably when a spec class is serious about keeping the cost down. Best bang for the buck is to choose your class wisely before you ever spend a dime, and pick one where you've confirmed that the build/running costs are within your budget.

good coilovers (JRZ likely)
camber plates + rear LCAs
replace every suspension bushing
wheels
2 x seats+harnesses
roll cage
BBK
oil cooler
data acquisition (maybe even add some shock pots)

Tires, pads, fluid etc I'll call consumable costs.

That should be well under $20k. Spend the rest on whatever go fast parts kids do these days and testing time.

For our use, BBK has reduced our pad consumption rate significantly and made our car look more presentable.

Here's another option:

Sell frs/brz.
Use that money and your extra $20k and buy a used gen2 Cayman.
Install a Quaife or Guard LSD, some Bilstein COs, maybe exhaust and a tune.
...then go to the track and beat 911's and GT3's all day every day ;D

The Cayman is a very good platform and much faster no doubt. I actually own a 911 right now that i am returning back to stock. I am looking for something more 'affordable' in case I crash or have mechanical problems.

while the purchase price of the cayman is not bad. A used one run into $25k with the new DFI engines.
There are still too many horror stories with the porsche engines and they are horribly expensive to repair. The only porsche that is build for the track is the GT3.

The cost of a GT3 is very acceptable as resale value is very good and it is track ready from the get go. No need to play around with cooling, brakes, etc etc, it is all there and factory engineered. But in case of accident or mechanical problem, you are talking 10's thousands of dollar very quickly.

I am also tired of porsche shops who are very into themselves. No cool shop around me. And everything is suddenly more expensive. They call it the porsche tax!

With the FRS, I know that I don't have to worry if I hit a wall or blow something on it. it will be reasonable to repair.

Depends on driver experience and tires... but for a quick sprint race, they'll survive 1 race at a time...

Good points. You definitely need to be a drug dealer kingpin to be able to support yourself with Porsche parts, labor, its' low reliability and for peace of mind if anything breaks down.

And we can also easily work on the 86 ourselves ....no need for overpriced labor/service.

Not sure in which order i'll be proceeding. I am waiting to get to the track in the stock form to see what has priority.

Based on my reading here I'd say

Step1 --- Stockish + tires + pads +seat + harness. Making sure the car drive straight
1.Seat + bracket: Momo Daytona $1200
2.Harness Bar: $200
3.Wheels: 17x8 $1000 [Enkei]
4.Tires: $1000 [BFG R1 225/45/17]
5.Wheel Studs: $100 [ARP]
6.Brake Pads: $400 [Carbotech XP12 Front - Back]

Step2 --- Endurance
7.Used Traqmate: $300
8.Oil Cooler: $700 [JR oil cooler]
9.Catch Can: $200 [Radium auto]
10.Radiotor: NO UPGRADE ?

Step3 --- Brakes
11.BBK: $2100 APR sprint

Step4 --- Suspensions
12.Suspension KW ClubRacer: $3200
13.Adjustable Arm kit: $2200 [RacerX kit]

Step5 --- Tune
14.Exhaust header + straight pipes: $500 [which the best track header ?]
15.EcuTek tune: $1500

Step6 ---
16.Rollcage full: $2000 [Custom build]
17.Fire suppression system: $500 [?]

Revised safety cost and without BBK: $12,500
plenty left over for more gizmos.
HKS or Tomei EL Catless Header, no point in the straight pipe unless you like it loud.
Coilovers matched to springs on a shock dyno
Sway bars

No one has mentioned aero yet? How about a splitter, diffuser, and big ass Voltex wing?

I start seeing oil starvation thread in here, is that a problem with slick tires ?
Should we think about deep oil sump or accusump system to keep oil pressure ?
I am planning to use banked track like homestead or Daytona so I need oil starvation under control.

About aero I see no cup series allowing them so I assume the car will do fine without them
I don't plan on doing time attacks

If we are going the selling route, then he would be better off buying a well sorted race winning SpecE30 or Spec Miata and then using the rest of the money for track weekend fees and tires.
