Wow Consumer Reports totally trashed it by raising some valid points actually.

I've got a MK6 GTI and it's a great multi-purpose car, but doesn't really have the edge or character of a car like the FR-S. It feels pretty soft and has that typical FWD push, so it ends up feeling like every other car out there after a while.
But if you won't be using your car for track/autox/backroads and want something more refined, it might make sense. Just make sure to get the new MK7 with performance pack. APR's stage 1 tune is making 316 hp / 381 tq on pump, which should be fun for very little cost. They claim a 13.2 @ 110 mph quarter mile.

http://www.goapr.com/products/ecu_up..._gen3_mqb.html Yeah I was pretty shocked too. A lot of the MK6 guys are thinking about trading in just for this reason.

Bullshit you need a minivan for a one or even two kids. Unless you have triplets you'll be fine with anything that can fit rear-facing seats. We were going to keep the Yaris hatch when we found out my wife was pregnant but it didn't fit a rear-facing seat, so we traded in for a Camry. It's a bit of a squeeze on the front passenger legroom but I can fit a compact rear facing seat in my 500, so my wife and both of my kids can all fit in there if for some reason we ever had to.

I've yet to drive one but I rode in the back of one yesterday during a test drive (just started selling VW over the weekend) and it was pretty sharp and quick! The extra bump in torque over the previous generation makes a big difference. If I didn't loathe FWD so much I'd tell you to get it, but I loathe FWD, so, yeah.

the MY15 GTI is a BADASS fwd car. for those that dont require "rwd" to be mandatory, the new GTI is one of the best fwd cars i drove that didnt feel too much like a typical fwd. i drove through mulholland a couple times too and it was damn impressive. the new one has a performance package that bumps hp 10, but you get a mechanical lsd, summer tires and variable ratio steering (its not fixed ratio like the Golf). i can see how some picky people might think this or that might be too light, but when you put it in sport mode for steering, it really tightens up the steering and feel too.
all that being said, i still prefer my FRS. but that's cuz i specifically wanted a compact rwd coupe.

I had a MKV GTI w/ Stage I APR and it had plenty of pickup for the street. The car was great while I was in college and did everything I asked of it -- I could fit a queen bed frame from IKEA, unload, and hit up some great driving roads while maintaining 30mpg. Super practical.
But those numbers for the MKVII Stage I are incredible! With my generation's APR Stage I, DSG's launch control became useless as I sat there spinning tires with 300lb/ft. I can't imagine how the MKVII is going to put all that power down. |
