Just read this on C&D as well. No turbo on Fr-S, BRZ maybe.

Does a back seat or moderate sized trunk matter to you? If so, BRZ.

Do you want a drop-top or a quick 0-60? Pick up a Boxster.

Only have around 30K in your budget? BRZ.

boxter 50k

subaru brz 28k - 22k in mods

with 22k you could make the brz a lot faster than a base boxter and have the same handling and better electric power steering feel... and back seats... lol

22 k in mods is a ton of cash. I agree with this guy. If you like tinkering and modding cars, I would go with the BRZ. If you just want it to come straight from factory, get the boxster.

The only main different from modding yourself and factory is reliability issues. I think that no matter what you decide, you will definitely enjoy the car.

"ToyoBARU or the '13 Boxster for my 40th this summer.

Im getting a car this summer so the crisis is NOW!
I don't need the back seat.
The beauty of the Boxster to me is: wheels, springs, exhaust and Im DONE!
With the ToyoBARU id be constantly tinkering!
And with the high mileage I do, the drama of maintaining an after market turbo never appealed to me, nor does voiding warranties. (nor does being without a car if issues arise)

THANKS for the feedback and dont worry 'bout the price:
i have $30Gs CDN cash for the ToyoBARU or 1/2 the Boxster paid!

No they aren't, it's a nuance in the author's writing. Do you really think C/D doesn't know that manufacturers source parts from other manufacturers on every single vehicle produced? They've mentioned Toyota's contribution to the engine in previous write ups, so clearly they know it's not all Subaru parts. By saying it's "Subaru's work" he's basically saying they had the dominant hand in fashioning the car's engineering, from the choice in parts to the feel. That's it.

If you want to take issue with them giving Subaru too much credit for the engineering aspects of the car, then I completely agree. Obviously, Toyota played a pretty big role with regards to the powertrain and suspension set up, especially since they adjusted it for the GT-86/FRS. The fact that Toyota's CEO was test driving the thing shows they were very involved with the engineering. Either way, I don't get why it matters who gets credit. The end result is a great car regardless of which version you buy.

Get the Boxster/Cayman. They were the benchmarks for the BRZ/FRS, so if you have the means, why not get the Porsche? Might as well go all out for the 40th.

The only reason I'm getting a BRZ and not a Cayman is because the nearest Porsche dealer is 2 hours away from me. I didn't want to worry about getting warranty work taken care of without a dealer nearby. Plus, my Subaru fanaticism played a small role.

I'll read the review later, but Subaru sure can design a sound tube. They measured 8db louder under throttle than the excessive engine noise of the Impreza.

Mind you auto buyers will be laughing at the gas station.
In 5 years when they make up the cost of the auto.. or 15 when the manuals end up averaging about the same in real world conditions.

I'd be hard pressed to go Cayman R over Boxster Spyder though...
