![]() VIS AMS hood with rain guards (rain guards has been removed for maximum venting). So I got my hood installed, ran on the streets and Auto-X last weekend. Ambient temp - +95F, relatively high humidity for Portland OR. I can see heat waves coming out of the vents while stopped. Still having coolant temp issues with stop-and-go traffic, rising to about 216F until the fans kick on, dropping to about 204F, back and forth.. Auto-X wise, the temps were pretty good, 219 oil/208~216F coolant. Only thing I notice is that temp recovery is better with the vented hood. Once I get my temps up (230F oil, 218F coolant) and mimic a "cooling run" on the highway, it does drop pretty fast now. My thought is that the vents do not help that much while going hard/traffic high temps, but recovery time is improved. That is my honest opinion on the hood so far, not sure how other people are seeing -10F ~ -15F difference with a vented hood. I think this VIS hood has one of the biggest openings compared to other hoods. Perhaps the design is horrible. ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm scheduled to have it paint matched soon, and I am satisfied with the quality/design of the hood. As for combating the heat, there are other useful mods to get the temps down.. Still scratching my head with the coolant issue.

I saw that hood a while back, and it definitely had the most vent area. It will be the one I get soon.
If you can make the fans turn on and stay on, I bet your temps would stay consistent. My fans turn on early and stay on, and my coolant temps do not move at all. Our cars really rely on the fans I think. |

I've had oil temps to 260f and my coolant stayed around 210f oil temp recovery is fast settling back down to 215-230 pretty quick.'but I have stock fans with shroud, robi spec cooler combo and a huge Fmic blocking my radiator...

Yes, I am running the Hydra standalone though. I would think Ecutek could also turn the fans on at a low temp as well though.
The shroud I think is very important as well, stock shroud/fans or aftermarket, the shroud focuses the air through the entire radiator. |

Put louvers or a gurney flap in front of the vents, and you'll get much more suction out of the engine bay.

@BRZPDX are you using the stoke radiator? From a couple of post ago it look like it, if so you are more than ok! I could live some time with that at autocross, but a bigger radiator would let you drive "maybe all day without need to cool down".
The fans, well they are use (or designed to be use) when the car is NOT moving, as well as the shroud... They won't pass more air through the radiator, compared with 20-25mph "car running". The oil cooler, I'm really interested, you sir have better control that most on turbo, and that's the only thing holding me back to change from SC to turbo. By the way how many rows have your oil cooler? *the rule is: if your car make more hp it will need more heat dissipation capacity, but if recycle exhaust heat then is no need, it's a urge.* |

My fans are set to turn on at like 170-180. This way, they are on ALL the time while the car is running at temp.
This is important IMO on front mounted turbo cars. The fans Cannot be cycling on and off with the car warmed up, because when they're off, radiant heat is literally baking everything around all the hot parts. The fans keep the air moving, puling air through the radiator and also they keep air moving and prevent the fans and radiator and other parts from being damaged by radiant heat. I would not worry at all about overspinning the fans either. I've seen a number of cars with pusher fans, and at speed (fans off) the blades were barely spinning. Our small grill openings and sealed engine bays don't flow enough air to overspin the fans, especially with them sitting behind an intercooler, condensor, and a radiator. Once the fans are set to be on ALL the time, your temps will stabilize. This will also help keep the oil temps down as well. |
