4000 miles and I've had the burning smell for the last 600 miles or so. Dealer replaced the a/c compressor last week but the smell hasn't gotten any better.

I think I've linked my recurring burning smell to the front defrost being turned on when my car is starting up - anyone else get a burning rubber/asphalt smell after >2K miles when their defrost is on?

I thought I saw in a video review that there is some protective underplate below the engine that has a few holes in it where stuff can get underneath, which then puts the stuff in contact with the low-slung and hot exhaust headers. Because it can't just fall out as it would if there were no plate present, the stuff smoulders, releasing the smell.

it's just that coveted NEW CAR SMELL. Nothing to worry about!

Just over 11k miles and I just noticed a fairly strong burning oil smell coming from the engine bay. I checked the exhaust fumes at the rear and smelled no trace of oil, but the moment i put my head back in my engine bay i noticed it pretty strong. I'm turbo'd but wasn't pushing my car hard at all on this drive. If anything it was calmer than normal. Odd. Hoping it isn't an issue.

Anyone with over 500 miles who is still smelling something like oil burning should check out this:http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45097
Oil leaking from the passenger side rear cam cover onto the exhaust- on some cars it's a minor seep, but others leak enough to drip and cause the oil burning smell. |

They have re-sealed the cam plate on the back of the right cylinder head twice, resealed the rear camshaft cap in the same place, replaced the valve cover gasket on the same side and recently resealed the timing chain cover. GUESS WHAT??? Still burning oil on the exhaust on that side so...It still leaks! I complained to corporate and got an 8 year 100k mile extended warranty for free from Toyota but I feel like the employees at my local dealer don't take legitimate problems seriously enough. My next step is sending in the lemon law paperwork to see if that finally gets their attention. Oil leaking on the exhaust can cause a fire pretty quickly, take this issue seriously. |

It is hard to pinpoint where the smell is coming from when you open the hood. |

7000 miles on my car and I smelled burning yesterday, just when I thought I got rid of it. I haven't smelled it since I broke in my new muffler, so I'm not sure what it could be.

Bringing this thread back to life, currently over 23k miles and I've noticed a burning oil smell after longer highway runs. Always when I exit the highway and stop at a light. The smell will usually carry to the garage and I notice it coming from under the hood. I'll be checking for the oil leak.
