Looking at how a fuel pump is designed, combined with basic knowledge of heat transfer properties, it seems to me that the fuel running through the pump provides all the cooling necessary. That, and if overheating of the fuel pump is so likely that it requires constant submersion in a fluid, car manufacturers are doing a piss-poor job of designing their fuel tanks.

Apparently your idea is only valid for imports vehicles or earlier models...

Cool, thanks for the pic - does the textbook cite sources?

Obviously, by searching around and talking to just about anybody, everyone says about the same thing. But I don't like accepting things just because "everyone says so" . . . especially when there's such a HUGE volume of examples where it doesn't hold true.

Anyone want to guess what percentage of drivers keep at least a 1/4 tank all the time? I have absolutely no idea - 10%? Probably less? If keeping fuel pumps completely submerged is a required to keep them from burning out, we should see a massive failure rate, right? But how often do they go bad? Almost never.

It's not an idea of mine, it's an observation. I happen to have an electric fuel pump on my car, it's mounted externally, and it's only needed to be replaced once in 34 years - and that's because I ran over some road debris that banged it up. I can drive the car for hours, and the circa-1978 design roller cell style pump is only warm to the touch. Hard to imagine that modern turbine electric pumps have actually gotten less efficient than that.

Maybe the switch to turbine style pumps is to blame? Sacrificing heat efficiency for noise characteristics? I dunno, I still think we'd see pumps failing left and right if they were that desperate for cooling.

Ran mine maybe 10 miles past the fuel light coming on yesterday and ended up putting 11.125 gals if I remember right. Not too bad as far as I'm concerned. Knowing it will vary, but having about 2 gals reserve is fine by me.

My BRZ 6MT's low fuel light came on yesterday after ~312 miles. I drove another 60 miles at ~32 MPG before putting in 12.39 gallons (indicating that my light came on with ~2.7 gallons left).

That's anecdotal, but it's pretty close to your experience.

According to the multi-info-display, I averaged over 35 MPG for 140 highway miles last week, and 38 MPG for 30 miles yesterday. However, the multi-info-display's average MPG seems to read ~5% higher than actual MPG (based on my math when fueling).

I find that i have around 2 gallons of fuel when mine kicks on. Today I was short on cash and only put ten bucks in the tank to get me to work tomorrow morning. $2.25 gallons of shitty Cali 91. Odd thing is my gas light didnt turn off and I only drove maybe 10 miles from when the light was on at most.

Confused as to why 2 gallons of fuel plus say 1.5 to 2 in the tank wouldnt turn the light off?

Sooo.... How many miles have you traveled with your fuel light on?

It's a guess, but I've driven as many as 40 with the fuel light on. Gauge was still above Empty at that point.

Well I made it 37 miles to work. Lets see if I can make another ten between work to the bank to the pump. Buh.

Haha, well if you don't have some serious modifications (like bigger injectors, turbo, etc.) you should be able to make 30-50miles on the reserve just fine...unlike me. When I get on the throttle hard I get about 2mi/gal at 5K RPMs and up lmao. I'd be eff'd for reserves on E-85.

I don't think any of us are getting great gas mileage when we have the pedal down, and running in the high RPMs. That's probably not something I would do with the fuel light on unless I knew the gas station was near!

I also drive AT. But on my first tank I only got 270 sth when lights on. Is there something I do different from u ?. I am still within break in period. Going over 4k rpm few times cuz of down shift. So anything I do wrong ?.. I don't drive aggressive since I'm still within 1000 miles

I believe the manual says you need to put at least 4 gallons in after the fuel light turns on to have the fuel light turn off. But I'm going from memory.

Just some of my observations. For my FRS, the fuel level indicator comes on when it reaches exactly 18% fuel level (using Scanguage II precise fuel lever indication, it's exactly the moment the fuel level goes from 19 to 18%). When I fill the tank, with auto shutoff, the tank level shows 95% consistently.

Okay serious question. Does anybody want to bring me a half a gallon or a gallon. My first meet and idk if I'll make it; I might have to go straight to Fremont from work to fill up
