Looking for a Dash Cam

Im currently looking a very good quality dash cam that will last me for years within the $100-200 range.

Some features im looking for:

Wide angle and HD 1080

I want it to be small/discrete.

Not to have GPS, since that can be used against you when you get in an accident. The police and/or insurance company can say that "speed" was a factor, so a big NO on GPS.

thanks for your help guys.

PS: i live in Socal

We know 20 mph in an 86 looks like 50 mph faster than a minivan also going 20. So that is legit.

I wouldn't worry about your dash cam recording incrimintating info since your car is already recording it, and can be accessed by police order if needed.

If you cause an accident and speed was a factor, you deserve whatever the fuck gets thrown at you.

Don't want GPS eh? Let me tell you about my day yesterday...

I'm sitting stopped at a light with a dozen or so cars in front of me. In front of me is an old lady in a new Hyundai Elantra hatchback and in front of her is a Suburban.

The old lady starts inching forward, bit by bit until *dink* makes contact with the suburban... maybe she was falling asleep, maybe she was texting, I don't know. Her reverse lights come on and she backs up a bit as the guy gets out of his suburban to look at what occurred and talk with her. Eventually he gets back in his suburban and they continue forward where he's turning left into a Best Buy parking lot but she continues on and drives away.

I think to myself: "Was she suppose to follow him but didn't? Well, let's go have a chat with him anyway because if that's the case I can help, I have a dashcam."

I talked with him about it and he was pretty cool and that he didn't ask her to follow him but instead saw that there was no damage to the huge trailer hitch on his huge SUV and he told her, no harm no foul.

Then he said, "had it been any harder I would have had a sore neck." Asshole, and yes he was implying that he would have milked her insurance company. That means that he has no moral opposition to committing fraud. Now, let's she had a dashcam and she bumped him hard enough to have done some damage to his SUV and he tried to file a health claim for whiplash or something else. The GPS can be used to vindicate her from fault on that claim.

So yes, the dashcam and GPS can help save you from fraud which really is the primary reason for the dashcam in the first place.

Chattanooga and N2oniferno are both right as well. The accident investigators can EASILY determine speed without GPS... I know, my father did contract work drafting up diagrams of the roadways to be used in court and when creating the drafts it was easy to calculate trajectories and vehicle speed with a little calculus.

Have fun at your future trial!

This. I saw some of the work the SCHP MAIT Team did when I was with DPS. They can definitely put it back together.

GPS is just as likely to show a momentary increase to 20MPH as it is to record 0MPH as you're creeping along the road. In a low speed fender bender, GPS would be completely useless, especially the crappy modules they put inside dashcams.

In my mind the only reason to have GPS is for use on a track, or to overlay a breadcrumb trail into your dashcam road trip movie.
