I had the same issue about 3 months into owning my FRS it was at the 12 o clock spot back side of the wheel. Took it to the dealer and they replaced it no questions asked said it was under warrenty.

I never put any chemicals on the steering wheel, and the only thing I put on my hands is GOJO when I wash them after work. My coworker has the same car, and we use the same stuff to wash our hands with and he hasn't had a problem so I wouldn't go blaming the soap. If it is acidic hand sweat like someone else mentioned, then maybe toyota may have to change materials. I'm not the only one with the problem, and it's a 3 month old wheel.

You are the minority though so don't expect Toyota to change anything. You have managed to already damage 2 steering wheels when people still have perfect original steering wheels that got a First 86 car.

Yep... mine too... 2013 BRZ with 10k. I bought mine as a CPO but it's peeling at the 7 o'clock position also. I figured it was from the previous owner scuffing it... but with this thread... looks like the leather is delaminating a bit... like skin peeling after a sun burn.

can we just find a good local store to wrap it with quality leather? if oem wheels are so bad, i'd rather pay to have it properly wrapped, instead of tearing my car apart free of charge.

I've got 37,xxx miles on my BRZ with the original steering wheel. No peeling, no cracking, no flaking.
If it does start to get ugly, I'll probably send it out to JPM to get thickened and wrapped in better leather. Or get the TRD fatboy wheel. |

My wheel has started peeling on both sides (3 and 9 o'clock). =/ Need to take it into the dealer and hear what they have to say. 29k miles. I haven't been using any type of chemicals to clean the wheel.
Anyone just go strait up aftermarket? I had an OEM Nardi on my Miata and miss it, especially compared to this crap. 13 years, 100k miles, faded color from hand wear but still holding strong. *shrugs* |

Definitely take this problem in to the dealership! I took mine in for an oil change, pointed out the peeling, and the service guys took photos of it to send in to Subaru.
I just got the call that the replacement wheel is in and ready to be installed! Hopefully this one lasts more than a year! |

Just had mine replaced today by my dealership. No questions asked. This was after the first dealership try to tell me I used armor-all on the wheel (I don't use armor all, or any cleaning product for that matter on the steering wheel) or that I didn't wash my hands enough before driving my car (Really?). Then they try to say that it is in fact a wear item. Cute.

If dealers say the steering wheel is a wear item, ask them what the service interval is. Everything that is a wear item has a service interval. oil - 7.5k. brakes - 2mm etc.....

Got the call from my dealership today that my steering wheel is in.
"We'll replace it once as a good will gesture" "You mean as a warranty claim, right?" I don't get it... in all the cars I've owned and my family is owned, there's probably close to 1.5 million miles combined on the ones I can remember driving. Not a single one has ever had an issue like this, even my WRX that was notorious for crappy interior and I personally put 110k on. And this thing starts tearing up in the first 2500 miles. I don't get it. |

Just replaced my steering wheel with a nappa leather and carbon fiber aftermarket one. I was able to peel back the "leather" cover on the oem and not to my surprise, it is a bonded/ reconstituted "leather".
