I know this is an old thread but I can confirm that it's normal to see the edge of the air filter

I've never touched the air box since I bought the car new and this is from the factory

I had mine sitting incorrectly for a while until I saw this thread and checked it. I bought a Wix air filter that has the rubber/plastic around the edges so it fits better than stock and I got mine to noticeably snap into place and seal all around. You can feel it when its sealed and you can see the two sides of the air box are aligned parallel with each other then its in correctly. Thanks again for this helpful post.

Thank you, I can rest easy now.
On a side note does anyone know if the K&N filter comes already oiled? or does oil need to be applied on first install?

Has there been discussion or similar comparisons on the OEM Engine Air filter vs Mann-Hummel MA 1026 vs MAHLE Original LX 1286?

Thanks!

I'm not saying I recommend doing it this way, but you can angle up the rear of the airbox and you don't have to unbolt anything. It's still really difficult and I probably would've saved more time if I unbolted everything, but I didn't have my tools handy.

Edit: Deleted because I did not realize how much the air intake thing can bend. Embarrassed to say it took me 2.5 hours to do a freaking air filter change.

Remove parts around it. Remove sound tube and remove the elbow from the throttle body and pull the whole intake out.

I believe you have to pull the bumper off to remove the snorkel.

I can't really tell if I need to do this your way. I didn't have tools at the time so I simply opened the top clips, loosened the engine-side of the 2 halves of the box, and fussed with it until I figured out how it fits and resecured all 4 points.

Is there any part of the installation that is impossible without doing it your way or am I ok?

I'm in the same boat. I feel like I did it properly but my OCD keeps kicking in and I can't help but think something is off. Is it possible to install the k&n air filter without removing any bolts?
