Hopefully the car is ok.

A lot of bad accidents happening at Summit lately. I was just reading yesterday about the instructor (passenger) who died earlier this year instructing at Hyperfest at SP Jefferson Circuit.

I was thinking about taking my GTI to Jefferson next month, but all the talk about SP not being safe gives me pause, especially since I've never done Jefferson before. It was recently expanded, but apparently there are a lot of trees in the run-off areas that shouldn't be there.

I've run at Summit Point a lot - only on the main circuit. Jefferson scares me with the lack of barriers. I'd like to take on Shenandoah, but I can't get my calendar to sync up with FATT days there or TrackDaze or other HPDE that interest me. I have seen cars wreck - but every single one the driver (and instructor) walked away, and most of the cars' damage was less than what you would expect for the issue. LOTS of AP1 S2000s spun out (especially in the rain), mustangs, vettes, 370z, etc. If you leave the traction control nannies on, or even VSC Sport mode, you have a fallback - especially if you haven't run on a track before. The great thing about main circuit is that there is gravel and runoff room in the critical areas. I think SP is a great place to learn how to drive on a track.

That doesn't mean it is without risk. If the risk makes you nervous, take out the additional insurance policy. FATT is a well run event.

both good points. The combination of elevation changes and quick transitions at summit can learn you alot. Just gotta have respect for the sport, especially at summit point. Have I seen you at summit point Texan? I was at summit main with trackdaze for the first time last July and also last weekend.

Unfortunately, I've only had the FR-S out once last year - October - it was POURING rain and a blast! I was traveling too much last year and this year, well, no excuses. I'll probably do FATT in Sept or October.

You might have seen me out there in my old Contour SVT.

Ah cool I try to talk to as many people as I can whenever I'm out. Sure I'll run into you at some point. I've done about 20 days with track daze and 1 with fatt.

Haha I've actually only tried Shenandoah so far (intermediate/solo level), but never tried Main. I've heard a few complaints about Shenandoah, but it seems relatively safe other than maybe 1-2 spots. I've seen a few spinouts, but only one actual wreck -- an NSX on big bend leading to the back straight. That one was bad (i.e., totaled) because of the speed of that turn and the concrete barriers. It's a really fun track though with all the turns - I'm sure you'd love it.

Good point on leaving the nannies on when I try Jefferson. The GTI is FWD and the traction control isn't fully defeatible anyway, so I guess it's effectively idiot-proof

I definitely want to try Summit Main someday. Good to hear there's plenty of runoff and gravel traps.

Yep, same one I was thinking about. Felt really bad for the owner. Can't imagine wrecking a car like that!
