Trade offs.

Actually it's not really a trade-off. They could have easily made more power on the 86 but chose a specific emissions target of 160g/km CO2.

Also the idea that the Gen is heavier because it has more power and needs to be stronger is largely false. The 86 is more rigid and stronger than the gen coupe overall through extensive use of more expensive high tensile steel which is both stronger and lighter. Don't forget the aluminum hood either. Thus the 86 is not as cheap as it could have been. Maybe one reason why it doesn't play in the $23K MSRP range.

"Light weight was achieved by using a large percentage of high-tensile steel, an aluminum hood, and thin glass in the rear and rear quarter-panel windows.

The high-tensile steel used in the upper part of the body helps lower the car’s center of gravity."

The only thing the 86 might be able to use for 350hp could possibly be beefier mounts, axles, drive shaft and better wheel bearings (which we need anyway cuz Subaru). All those would be largely negligible in cost and weight penalty versus making the cabin out of high tensile steel.

Plus all those items are user replaceable/upgradable. I wouldn't count that possibility out on a future version. They already revised the suspension and mounting.

He's saying you may have OWNED an 86, but you never knew how to properly drive the vehicle. Thus, you moved on to the straight line piggy racer.

Owning the car =/= Knowing how to drive the car

Have you read the first post I made in this thread?

It's seems like you and the other tools shamelessly hounding this thread for no reason are ignoring the fact that I made a bipartisan argument weeks ago.

And for the record, I tracked the FR-S twice quite successfully.

I read all of this thread and I know what has been posted.

That doesn't change the fact that you really don't know what it is to drive an 86.

Except that I owned one for a year, tracked it twice, and put more than 36,000 miles into it. But, what do I know?

Hey man, you asked what he was saying... and I explained it to you.

No need to call me names.

Never claimed to know what you know. I was commenting on what you DON'T know.

Like you don't know how a twin performs on an autoX course, since you are in apparent disbelief that a twin performs on par with a 370z.

I like how you specifically did not point out autoX in the original post.

An FR-S simply does not challenge a 370Z on the track.

Actually I did. I said "Driven as it was intended to."

Everyone knows that the twins shine in the twisties. Tight, techical courses.

Not saying the twins are not good on the track. For their HP rating they are great on the track, but they are obviously not going to be faster than a high HP car.

The fact that the twins come as close as they do to their high HP competitors speaks volumes on how well the platform was designed.

You do realize, that in this entire thread, I've never once spoken against the 86 platform? I know exactly what it does, how it does it and why it is as good as it is.
