Guys below nailed it. This car is the same car payment as the FRS with 0% interest for 63 months. So same payment, slightly longer pay off (about a month or so longer), and no interest vs I think 2.9% on the FRS. The FRS was kind of a "as long as we can" car in the terms of it's practicality. When he showed me what he would give me for the FRS, my jaw hit the floor. They paid it off practically.

And it is exactly what the other two below mentioned, The car oddly gets the similar gas mileage to the FRS, but is usable. It's not a "toy car" so to speak. Financially, and practically, it was a WAY better decision, ESPECIALLY for a family. I can actually get my dogs in this thing.

Also modding was a huge factor. I have no need/desire to mod this car. Besides, it wasn't bought for me

It has a different intended use (granted, varies person to person) but it's easy to see how it can be a financially responsible decision combined with knowing your personal tendencies.

Additionally, he traded in the FR-S to get the outback instead of grabbing 2 payments and ditching the civic instead.

Congrats OP!
Bingo! You two nailed it! Thank you! Two biggest sellers for me on the trade was, like I mentioned, they basically paid off the FRS, so very little money was lost out of pocket, and 0% interest!

They would have only given me $18k for the car without the mods. All said and done, it would have evened out and I would have had to spend the time parting out the car and then hope and pray the leftover '14 was still on the lot. It was the last one and just happened to be the color the wife wanted.

1st on your list should be the weathertech floor mats for your outback.
I'm excited about getting into another fun car already! Might even come back to the 86 when it's a better time (5 years), but we want to get into a house after the outback is paid off.

I agree with you on the mats, but we live in SoCal where it the weather is pretty spectacular 98% of the year. Still worth it you think? I actually had the same thought, just not sure if we need them.

Congrats on the new car! ...But I would have traded in the Civic Wife gets the car she wants, you get the "affordable" fun car. Win-win.

That said, it's very cool that you basically sacrificed your car to get your wife a brand new car that she enjoys. Good man/husband.

Fair enough, he was preaching pretty hard about not buying a car with finance or be in debt in general.

Good news is that, once again, car will be paid off in the same amount of time as the FRS would have been and it's something we can keep for 10+ years without having to worry about outgrowing if/when our family starts growing.

I still feel the same about debt. We are hitting ours pretty hard right now. We should be 100% debt free in 5 years, 4 months, and that includes her school loans. Idea at that time is to buy a house while our credit score is high and then done. And once again, 0% financing…. This literally is FREE money. Not "practically" free like 1.9%

Still, you could get some nice wheels and a few suspension parts for the OB. Maybe a drop in filter....

i'm in socal too, and they're a must IMHO. i originally purchased the outback with the subaru all-weather floor mats (same ones you have in your pictures), but they didn't provide good coverage. also, you'll find that the rubber material tends to attract dust and is harder to brush off and clean.

the weathertechs are the bomb. they don't hold onto dust/sand like the subaru all-weather mats do, and they also provide more protection/coverage. it doesn't matter that you're not dragging in mud and snow; it's to reduce scuffing and wear on the factory carpeting. floor mats are easier/cheaper to replace and clean than the carpeting, in general. even with regular floor mats, your carpets are going to get dirty and worn from shoes since the standard floor mats don't protect much of the sides. the weathertechs provide more coverage and reduce that wear and tear. when you have a kid, you'll regret not having them. spills, dropped snacks etc. all clean up easy with weathertechs.
