I have 0 Knowledge of rolex's and I am doing the legwork for my FIL who wants to buy it. Buying such an item online seems like a bit of a EHHHH. Does anyone know any contacts in the DC, Maryland, VA area that could help out? Is there a watch forum that would have better input on how to buy such a piece, what to look for if your buying used vs new etc.

Any help would be great, I am not trying to steer him away from his tastes, what he wants is what he wants.
Rolex can be pretty finicky to buy used, let alone online. Service history/genuine replacement parts is a huge deal apparently. My watchmaker suggested I get him to open up and inspect any Rolex I'm interested in. No charge from him.

For what it's worth, older all steel (that one says white gold bezel, but what's the point of white gold over steel?), no date models can go for less than half of that one's price. And they haven't changed to much over the years. Same style and smallish 36mm size.

Get a pro. Problem with older Rolexes (that Datejust is maybe mid 80s?) is that they are unremarkable by modern standards. That one has an acrylic crystal, for example. So now is it an original and authentic plastic Rolex part, or a 25¢ Chinese replacement. For the money I would rather it be authentic (and hand buffed with vintage champagne and antique silk handkerchiefs by Swiss virgins) even if the replacement is functionally superior.

That may be a silly statement, but that is kinda the point of a Rolex. Simply that it IS a Rolex. That's what jacks up the price. So make sure it's 100% legit.

Figure I'd reply, my Father in law bought this beauty from a Authorized Rolex Dealer. The forums definitely helped and holy crap I know more about buying rolexes than I ever wanted to know LOL.

Whenever I first saw pictures of the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer Chronograph a few years back I really liked it...some don't like the asymmetrical design, I LOVE it! Flash forward to just now and I found a reputable site with them at great prices (grey market) and just had to buy it. So I have this exact model (H76552955) coming in...

I will need to find the right leather and nylon Natos for it....
