Can someone tell me what this button does?

Hi guys, could any of you tell me what this button does?

Iv pushed it and nothing seems to happen, google doesn't return any hits, and the manual doesn't have anything about it.

I'm guessing thats the button the get the car out of park if it is stuck in park?

Usually its a hole you have to push a key or screwdriver in though.

Also obligatory, "wouldn't have that problem with a manual"

See if it lets you out of park when you press it.

I googled pics of BRZ autos and they have the same thing except the button is flush and not sticking up. So it must be the gear shift release.

If you are really worried take it to the dealer and ask whats up with the button.

Don't worry about it and tell her to

So basically it's to get you out of park without the engine running? I'll try it just now and see

this type of button is in almost every automatic vehicles.

usually hidden and hard to press (need a stick of some sort)

but it's useful, when you don't have a key or something's wrong with the car and you can start the car but need to move the shifter out of "P".

Shift-Lock. Different things can set it off; your brake light fuse being out, reverse lights, etc. It's so you actually check your car before you drive down the road at night without brake lights and that sort of thing.

Why they bother to kill the trees is beyond me. It is in the manual, don't know the page in the dead-tree version. From the BRZ PDF, page 390:

If the select lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake, there may be a problem with the shift lock system (a system to prevent accidental operation of the select lever). Have the vehicle inspected by your SUBARU dealer immediately.

The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to ensure that the select lever can be shifted.

Set the parking brake. Vehicles without a keyless access with push button start system: Turn the engine switch to the “ACC” position. Vehicles with a keyless access with push button start sys- tem: Turn the push-button ignition switch to “ACC” mode.

Depress the brake pedal. Pry the cover up with a flat-head screwdriver or equivalent. Press the shift lock release button. The select lever can be shifted while the button is pressed.

As far as I know basically this. I had to use it on another vehicle to get it into neutral when my battery was dead and it wouldn't shift.
