Brand new BRZ

Hey guys, I just picked up my 2014 White M/T BRZ today! I remembered how terrible dealerships are today but i also got to get my new car so in the end it was a win

I had a question just on the basic break in period and the do and don'ts. This is my first brand new car and i am 20 years old so i have not had lots of past experience. I noticed on the way home i took the interstate and was going around 75. I stopped in a parking lot to pick up some groceries and smelt a burning smell, similar to burnt rubber? The car had 15 miles on the odometer, and was sitting in the show room and i picked her up.

Are the tires just breaking in? or should i ease off the accelerator.

Thanks in advance!

I plan on modifying my BRZ and really treating it well but i need to walk before i can run so want to start off right !

I would learn to hand wash properly, never let the dealer wash it or at a car wash.

Burning smells are normal for the first couple of thousand miles. They load this engine with sealant and protective coatings that are burning off, plus the clutch will stink and the header will give off a metallic burning odor as it breaks in. The smells fade after a while, but it will probably always smell like a sports car.

The most important thing to remember when breaking it in is to NOT use the cruise control for the first 1000 miles. Using the cruise control can prevent the rings from seating properly. They'll leak, and the car will never develop its full potential power.

I have a 2014, and my owner's manual said to give the car its first oil change at 7500 miles (which I think I read was supposed to change for 2015). However, the dealer sent me a different schedule suggesting the first change at 2700. I stuck with the dealer's suggestion. The oil collects a lot of metal during break-in, and it's not a bad idea to get the factory fill out of there earlier rather than later. I doubt that's a critical issue, but I started feeling a bit OCD about metal sparkles bouncing around in my engine and clogging my filter.

The clutch may feel weird to you. It sure did to me. If you leave it alone, the clutch return spring will break in and it will smooth out. However, if you find yourself hating the clutch, you can adjust it. Likewise with the shifter. I let mine break in without modifying it, and now mine clicks into each gear very nicely.

A lot of people get impatient and start making mods without really getting to know the car first. A lot of the early awkwardness that people start trying to chase out of the car will work itself out as everything breaks in. Personally, I'm glad I waited.

Oh, and crickets. It's probably just a matter of time before your high pressure fuel pump starts chirping. This sound is normal, even if it is annoying, and there is no 100% reliable fix for it.

Nice job getting the car and welcome! I have no doubt that you will enjoy that car fully. Oh, and nice color choice!

Don't use cruise control during your break in period. Try varying the speeds if you are on the freeway. Don't go above 3-4K RPM.

And lastly, enjoy the new car!
