Why does pricing seem so sporadic?
So, hopefully in a few months I'll be buying a BRZ. My Honda fit that I was going to trade in got backed into by a coach touring bus in a parking lot, and because of that what dealers are willing to give has gone down substantially even though its fixed
![]() Makes me so mad that someone elses stupidity counts against me in this caseSo I've been looking at used BRZ's. With anything in life I like to search for a deal, im not the type to buy new unless its something I need to. I live in Upstate New York, and while in 2013 there were quite a few BRZ's around it seems they have all but gone and dissapeared. I can only imagine people find RWD in the snow a bit intimidating and I know of a few kids that wrecked. Anyways back on topic, Im willing to drive to pickup my car so I've been searching in the ~300 mile range or so for now from my area and ive noticed that the used BRZ market seems to fluctuate massively, and in a lot of cases seems to have no relation to mileage. 2013 SWP Limited BRZ near Boston Massachusets - 22,800 with 3000kmi 2013 SWP Limited BRZ in New Jersey - 24,800 with ~9000kmi 2013 SWP Limited here locally - 26,000 with 15,000kmi 2013 WRB Limited Massachusets - 21,900 with 5,000kmi 2013 Silver Limited here in new york, 25,000 with 12,000kmi WHy are the pricings so all over the place? I know things change in different areas but in general these are all within a few hours of eachother and it seems insane that some dealers are still trying to charge a few thousand under sticker for a 2013 used BRZ. I've spoken to 2 dealers who told me honestly straight up that they don't care about making money on the BRZ specifically, they just want to show sales on them. People trade them in before winter, accidents etc I went to a local dealer and looked at possibly seeing what I could do on a brand new one. I offered to put 2,000 down.. My honda fit trade in at ~4000, and asked if he could move the sticker down from their listed 28,600 down a thousand to 27,500, he basically sort of told me to go fuck myself. WHile he did not use those exact words the tone he had was pretty clear. Just seems crazy that some dealers are willing to work and move them, while others are holding onto them like their gold and trying to squeeze every little penny. The guy trying to sell it is trying to make $, that is his job.
The buyer's job is to get the price where they are comfortable.

Different markets, different options, different prices.
Also, it's spelled "sporadic" and you don't need to add the "k" before "mi" when you say things like 12,000 miles. For example, 12,000kmi = 12,000,000 mi. That's way too many miles. |

Sorry!
I understand different markets and options, however Im speaking of Limiteds that appear to have the same options and in some cases just an hour away from each other. Just surprised at how much pricing can change from dealer to dealer and how some seem to be holding out for every little penny while others are just looking to move them. I more or less was asking if thats normal for the pricing to fluctuate that much within a few hundred miles of each other.. What is a good price for say a 2013 BRZ with 5-10kmi on it? Id imagine a used 2013 BRZ with ~10kmi on it should be in the 22-23 range no? |

It is normal for some dealers to try and make maximum profit and others to try and just move cars.
Look at when the cars released. I was able to get one for MSRP with no problems from 1 dealer but another was ****ing me around. It's the nature of the business, maybe it is better for you to try private party.

Just purchased my 2014 SWP BRZ new last friday, 24mi on the car. List was a little over 29K with "popular package 1" on it (I think thats the one, with the auto dimming mirror etc.). Told them I would buy the car today of they brought it down to 27K & gave me something reasonable for my trade. They did & I was in & out of there in 2hrs. Traded a 2007 Scion TC w/115K miles which was also in a small accident, fender bender, not my fault but it does bring down the value of the car. When someone goes to buy, its gonna have a carfax. When we go out to get a used car you better believe Im gonna offer lower if its been in any type of accidnet. Thats just how it goes. KBB was 4.5K I asked for 3.5K they agreed. Just keep looking. Someone will work with you especially now cuz the 2015 are coming.

I could afford the car now, however im not gonna pay 100 more a month even if I can afford it. I'd like to keep my payments around hwere they are now. I don't work to pay off what i owe, I work to pay off what I owe and put a little on the side as a savings. Anywho I figure with the 2015's coming out and the winter months approaching I should be able to get a good deal on a used one around october or so.. Thanks for your input guys |

Not all accidents are on Carfax. Because of the condition of the vehicle, it could have some underlying issue. Perhaps the transmission is grinding, clutch is worn out, etc...
Every used car is in a different condition which means they're valued differently. Location also matters as well.

My old car has had the short block replaced by the dealership and that is NOT on the Carfax. Not sure if they are telling potential buyers or not.

I had hit a curb with my previous vehicle, which required the rear hub to be replaced. As well, the turbo was replaced at 21,000 miles (was not even necessary. Service department just did not know what else to do to fix the issues I was having). None of this showed up on the CARFAX. Neither did any of my oil changes, that were performed by the dealership /facepalm Bottom line, I trust CARFAX about as much as a car salesman's knowledge on a vehicle, which 90% of the time is ZERO! Had a car salesman think my Chevy Cobalt SS was a Ford, even though the Chevy emblem was gold and the car was black and another salesman told me the FR-S could outrun my Cobalt SS in a straight line /facepalm Another reason why I did not buy from that dealership and got a BRZ instead. |

This is what I did to get my BRZ for a great price. I had 2k to put down and an 07 wrx to trade (motor was knocking something fierce tho).
Go to dealership A and see what they will give you for a price. say the car there is 27,500 so after cash down it will be 25,500 minus trade (3,500 in my case ) comes out to 22,000.Go to dealership B and tell them what dealership A is offering. Dealership B will most likely offer you a bit more for trade and take a bit of the top. So they drop price of car to 26,500 and give you 500 more in trade. so your looking at a deal that is 1,500 better. Take the price dealership B gave you, go back to dealership A and share that price with them. and tell them that is without your trade in. If dealership wants to sell you the car, they will match that price. I did this out here in Cali and got a better deal by also 6k dollars because the first dealership matched what I said the other offer was (which did not include the trade in). They lowered there price substaintially and then still took my car for trade. Numbers are not perfect but pretty much I walked out paying just under MSRP for a limited AFTER tax and AFTER getting every extended coverage, warranty, and permiplate clear coat instead of taking an initial offer which once all this included brought the cost of the car up to 34,somethingK. monthly payment went from $480 to $400, over 72 months = 5,760 dollars I do not have to pay. If the dealership wants the Sale, they will make the sale. There is A LOT MORE WIGGLE room than they lead you on to believe. Get the dealership manager on the phone with the district manager and good things will happen. This was my case, I hope yours turns out to be successful as well. And boom your in a BRZ GOOD LUCK!EDIT: My car was a brand new 2014 BRZ Limited, with homelink mirror, bumper applique in silver with 14 miles on it, driven from one dealership to another where I bought it |

There's a link to the Carfax on the dealer's page. Just shows that it was serviced. Makes me scared of used cars in general. Of course, CPO warranty is also substantially better than factory. |
