Drive it like you stole it. The beast needs to get used to its normal duty cycle.

A classic example of how anyone can give really stupid advice on the internet, with no requirement of substantiation or basis in fact.

As an engineer, I ascribe to the manufacturer's suggestion* - no cruise control, no redline for the first 1,000 miles, etc.

*but of course, absolutes are never meant to be taken literally. It's a trade-off as mileage approaches the 1,000 mark - the closer I am to 1,000, the more frequent I'll push the RPMs higher. Think of the 1,000 mi. mark as a very, very long stretch and warm up, until the point where at 1,000 mi., you hit redline in an all out sprint.

Experience is the old tuning shop I knew that would break in 9th generation (mid-2000s) Corolla XRSs with the 2ZZ engine. The longevity and characteristics of engines broken in the way described above were reproducible consistently enough for me to consider it a good procedure.

I think if all you are going to do is spin around town just follow the OEM guidelines.
However if you are going to track the car break it in how you plan to drive it.
As mentioned you already know don't rev a cold motor wait for oil temps to hit 170F+. And don't leave the contaminated oil in long.

I broke my motor in hard, varying RPMs, full load, light load and dumped factory oil with Redline 0W20 at 1k as it matches close to factory fill for moly content.

At 16k and 22k my used oil analysis are perfect even with supercharger and track miles.

I broke mine in during my test drive. I didn't even know it until we got back to the dealership and I found out the car I was testing was the only pearl white 2014 on the lot!

Hahaha! Good to see another Grey in the group, I`m 42!

Yeah I`m still on my break in period too. Luckily for me my commute to work is half in town, and half highway, so she gets a little of both. I stick around the 4K as much as possible but I`ve run it up to 5500 a few times getting onto the highway. I look at it as a good guideline not a rigid rule. You don`t have to redline it to have a little fun while you`re breaking it in!

The cruise control thing is a good idea. You don't want to break it in at one single load on the highway, because the cylinder walls will break in square instead of with a taper, and the rings may not seat properly. If you're planning to put a lot of highway miles on it during that first 1000 miles, vary your speed frequently. I actually drove mine 700 miles within the first week I had it, but I avoided the highway where possible and took the back roads through a bunch of small towns to vary it up as much as I could.

You will see differing opinions here on whether the 4000 rpm limit is a good idea. There are some pretty good arguments for ignoring it. I'll leave that alone.

For the 2014s, the manufacturer said the first oil change should come at 7500 miles, whereas my dealer said it should come at 2700. I went with the dealer's schedule because the oil will have metal particles in it from the break in, and I wanted to get that shit out of there. I had read that Toyota and Subaru had changed the oil change interval to 6000 miles for 2015, but I would still get that first change done below 3000 to get the sparkles out.
The way I believe to break-in a engine is to drive below 4k RPMS but if you live in a busy area you'll have no choice but to go above the 4k. I always thought to drive on the highway during the break in. Go 50mph to swiftly but not quickly climb to 90mph back down to 55 up to 80, down to 60 up to 75 down to 65 up to 70. A very anal way of doing the break in but do it a few times during the first 1k miles and I think it'll break in nicely.

I remember hitting around 1,170 miles and I felt the engine just click into place during a hard/wide turn where I might of drifted around 3,500 rpms....

I don't believe in break in. I've never driven a car so fast on the way home from the dealership (It was a 100 mile drive)

I also have 4th gear grind.

(in reality, I don't think is a correlation)

I had my second gear grind and I felt 4th gear grind in a 2015 wrx test drive. Maybe its just these gear boxes breaking-in?
