In return Toyota would be helping BMW in hybrid tech.
Definitely. BMW has a way to mass produce carbon fiber parts in-house after making the i3 and i8.. and I heard Toyota is teaming up because of this. Might be one of many things though. No way they're gonna use a carbon fiber chassis on a budget sports car.

I have mine already, and it would make it feel that much more special.

One of the few cars I've seen get discontinued after four years (99-2002) was the second gen G20. So it's not unheard of to have a life cycle less than 5 years.
I agree with this too. My last car was very rare. I saw one maybe once a month. Now I see FRS's every other day, and BRZ's every few weeks.

Exclusivity is going down I'm cool with production being cut off.

It doesnt sound that gloomy...
They are possibly just switching partners from suburu to bmw. Also as others have said either way it doesn't matter we all got our cars. Worst case scenario we sell them for more later...

I can't see the car value catapulting.. rare, drivers car, japanese. All signs for good value.

Hmmm, so many rumours. This was flying about 6 months ago IIRC.

Maybe but who stands to gain from all of this?

Toyota ditch Subaru for the next 86: Toyota wins by freeing up resource in the new BMW relationship but Subaru loses and Toyota loses by virtue of their 20% stake (admittedly that wont be huge given the contribution the BRZ is making to Subaru). Toyota though does not have a 20% stake in BMW and remember, BMW does not build budget cars, their cheapest sports car is the 135i and that aint cheap compared to the twins.

Toyota ditch Subaru for the next 86: Who is to say Subaru will stop building? Subaru are free to build a boosted monster STi and create a real cult car (if they cant get the WRX motor in there they aint trying hard enough for fucks sake). They have the tooling already built. That would be a proposition that many 'purests' would find appealing and given Subaru's niche market positioning quite appealing to Subaru bosses. Toyota still wins IF they can make it viable financially. I'm dreaming here I know but how many of you would buy one if it had the WRX motor? Its same price as the WRX FFS!

Toyota ditch Subaru for the next 86: the next gen 86 is a high tech, expensive and altogether more complicated beast altogether. Sure its faster but already the car is moving from its original brief. Mazda and Alfa are sharing a future platform and Toyota will already price itself outside of this renaissance market for 'cheap, lightweight and fun' sports cars. What about Nissan? Scion (Toyota) loses because the new car wont fit their market space or budget - what market share will be lost in the key US / North American market - that is a big gamble. Toyota is alienating all those customers that bought into this car due to their love of the AE85/86. S16 anyone?

Toyota ditch Subaru for the next 86: I'll be parking my BRZ in the garage and not driving it. When the twins were announced many pundits predicted the BRZ would be the more viable long term 'investment'. Hell, there is only 20 odd of them here in NZ. Sure there will be some imported ex Japan but as I've literally got "BRZ001" I am quite relaxed at the prospect.

Toyota continues with Subaru with the next 86 and focuses on building a higher end sports car with BMW: Question: why wouldn't Toyota share its hybrid tech with its partner Subaru? Makes sense. Hybrid has lots of relevance to the rest of Subaru's line up.

Toyota continues with Subaru with the next 86 and focuses on building a higher end sports car with BMW: Question: are Subaru and Toyota both making money from the current platform and arrangement? If so why would they stop?

Toyota continues with Subaru with the next 86 and focuses on building a higher end sports car with BMW: For fucks sake we have not even gone through a face lift.

The blogger who gets the ad revenue from the clicks.

You are seriously overthinking this.

They'd move it up market. There will be a gap in the features that people enjoy on the BRZ, hence all the FRS special editions. And no matter what people say on here, most people have a hard time paying $30k+ for a Scion.

thats just an assumption, none of us really know if Toyota will do that. some of the special editions are already nearing that price tag.

I hope they continue them for 20 years and we get miata like levels of aftermarket, there's almost nothing that hasn't been done and documented on that car.

While we're tracking down chirps they have turbo kits and engine swaps more reliable than a new Honda.
