Go for the Civic SI if you're planning a long ownership for your next car. Imagine the expense of replacing the seals for the Fuel Injections out of warranty.

These cars are like BMWs. Own it and drive it hard while you still have warranty. Sell it and move on when the warranty is about to expire.

If buying this car outright in cash will drain more than 50-75% of your savings account, don't do it. Finance it or lease it. Why use your own money (except for a down payment, registration fees etc.) to buy a car when you can use the banks?

What if you lose your job tomorrow? Or wind up in a financial bind concerning your health, that of a family, or close friend?

Cars are a depreciating asset. You'll have less to lose if you finance or lease it. At least you can break even or profit if you ever need to sell the car if it no longer suits your needs.

As far as reliability, with a new car, you'll have a warranty to fall back on in case something happens whether it's the FR-S or Civic SI. But only time will tell if you come up with a reliability issue.

I just got the notion that the OP is paying cash from the first page:

if you have to keep questioning if it's a good choice, then you dont really want it. Google "problems with (insert any car here)" and you'll find results. it's almost like you're looking for reasons to buy the civic and not the frs.

Oh yeah. No one seems to have mentioned,
NEVER PUT A DOWN PAYMENT ON A CAR. Money wasted. If your credit will permit, don't throw money away. Someone mentioned depreciating asset. $27K out the door, all the way to the curb. As soon as you hit surface streets, BOOM, $20-22K TOPS is now the value. Buy the gap insurance, pay extra for the first year. Then, when value meets amount owed, cancel your Gap and get a check back from Toyota. Keep your down payment in your emergency stash.

OP, making $40K/year in Houston is a respectable income. I have a buddy that lives in Houston and he boasts about the low cost of living and affordable housing market. I've heard stories of brand new, 2500+ square foot homes priced at the low $200K's. I'm not sure what your situation is (if you're still living at home or wether you own a home or not) but buying a home is the wisest decision you could make. It doesn't have to be too glamours or big right of the bat. Get yourself a nice 2 or 3 bedroom townhouse. You can rent out one of the bedrooms and your house will pay you in dividends. As others have said, I definitely don't think it's wise to empty your savings on a car. To me, you already have the makings of a good down payment on a house and I'd build on that. Get yourself a house. You can get your twin a year or so down the road. Just my $.02

Holy shit dude! I'm definitely jealous of that. A house like that in a decent community in the Bay Area would set you back $600K+

I'm 22 and make $75k but if had a chance to do it over. I wouldn't!

60 payments is a long time!!!! If you have to buy it, get a year old one!

I wish I just bought a fun $10k car.

Since I want to buy a condo/house soon.

You'll need a time machine to be able to tell how a Toyobaru will hold up over 8 years of primary driving duty, and unless anybody posting here has experience from 2018 you're not going to get the answer you need to keep you sleeping sound at night.

The car seems to be pretty solid if your modifications are minimal.

If I was in your situation I would search for a used one, early 14s should be on the market soon, bank the $3k or so you will save for potential repairs, but for me I couldn't imagine owning a current Civic so your alternative isn't much of an alternative.

Since you're not talking about track days and tires and chassis dynamics I don't think you'll be too disappointed in the civic and you will certainly sleep better at night. I have zero regrets, I do now realize I could have had just as much fun at a fraction of the cost though. I'm at 27k miles a year and a half with zero issues, even my crickets went away.
