Good luck, Mike. As a physical therapist I highly recommend following MD orders and requesting cardiac physical therapy if the MD does not. Rest, eat well, and hydrate the days before pre-surgical instructions begin. All will be fine.

Here's hoping your recovery is quick! I know it's scary but it'll be over and done before you know it!

My 9 year old grandson recently had heart surgery for a leak near one of the valves. Scary shit.. But all went well and he's doing great !
They can do amazing things with the heart nowadays.. That's one area that they know really well. Hang in there.. I'm sure it's scary as hell.. But you will get past this bump in the road!

Thanks very much everyone!

Usually, I research anything I'm interested in, but I'm afraid I'll freak myself out if I read up about this, so I'm just going to have faith.

I've been low on energy for a long time now, just thought I was REALLY out of shape. Recently though I've been having severe chest pain when I exert myself, so I knew it was something serious. I know I've been operating at far below optimum, so I'm actually looking forward to feeling better and being able to getting back into shape.

Have faith Mike. Heart surgeons perform these procedures every day across the country. It is pretty much routine. You'll be fine!

You'll be able to exert yourself in a month or two with no issues at all.

I am not suggesting for a moment that you should not be worried or have concerns but 2 things come to mind.
1/ While certainly not minor surgery it is a relatively common procedure now days.
2/ Be thankful that the procedure is now available. (I have had insulin dependent diabetes since I was 5. If I had been born 50 years earlier I wouldn't have made it to 6)

You are a year younger than me. My job requires I go for an EKG once per year. Any irregularity is my biggest fear. Your age is on your side. I know they are doing Valve replacements in 70+ year olds with success. The younger you are the faster the recovery usually is.
Someone I know had stints put in as outpatient surgery for his chest pains. He was 76 at the time. He still doing well.

Take care and stay calm.

John

Oh Man! Today I went in for an angiogram, catheters run through my wrist up into my heart.

2 decades ago I had issues with pain meds after breaking my back, so I refused the pain meds for this procedure, I just can't go there. That said, this procedure hurt a LOT.

At least from here on I'll be knocked out. 4-5 days in the hospital, 4-6 weeks recovery since they'll be cutting my sternum in half. Yeay! fun stuff.

Looking forward to feeling better.

You should try Surgeon Simulator. It might help.
