That engine was first used in 1966

I have had my FR-S series 10 for a month and it has had a track day and it makes me wish I had looked at the Genesis Ultimate coupe. The specs look better on paper. I wish that Scion had swiped some of the features bequeathed to that car. The FR-S is just needing some of what Hyundai gave to the Genesis. Wish we could get the 348 HP, Brembo brakes, 19" rims & spoiler from the factory (seems a shame to waste such perks on the Genesis). Then again almost every poster wishes we had more power.. If only we had the best from both cars in one Huh? I guess that is why they have so many after market options to make more power for our rides..

K, you lost any credibility after 19" wheels for the track. Trade it in for a Gen coupe and you'll likely be in the "Oops, sorry I traded for a Mustang thread".

Factory Brembos are overrated anyway for track use. I'd get an AP Racing kit anyday over that s**t.

I dunno, if youre tracking it, you got the right car. Unless you step it up a notch to a 370Z, then again youre looking at low $40K, if you want ANY amenities at all. Its why i traded mine.

Anything with a rotary is a dinosaur and I am glad they are dead.

Don't for get the oem spoiler on the gen coupe. That down force it generates is definitely needed on the track.

Agreed. I think the technology has some impressive areas and had the potential for greatness, but if it were ever going to happen, it'd have happened by now. If you can't make a single one work well for more than 10k miles, just let it go, Mazda.

I drove an RX8 a few times and despised it. I liked the car, hated the engine as a street car. Just worthless. I couldn't help thinking "THEY HAVE A MONSTER TURBO 4, WHY DO THEY PUT THIS IN THEIR SPORTS CAR?" - I realize it'd make it heavier, screw up balance, etc but come on. Just a joke.

I always had a thing for great handling lighter weight cars. I had a deposit down during the RX8 release, but backed out after they had to lower the power rating on the cars in the US due to emissions.

On paper/concept the rotary engines are great, less moving parts, free revving, small, light weight, etc... If more companies were investing in the motor it might have had a chance, but with the only development being done by mazda (small company compared to other makes) and even they seem to not put in all their R&D efforts into it since they know it will be a low volume car. I don't see much hope in a robust rotary anytime soon.

To a much lesser extent obviously, but I think similar to the RX8 the thing holding back the twins is that engine. Not power, but reliability is a real downer on a otherwise great car.

Actually the 370Z led me to the FR-S.. It was the first car I shopped for.

The 370Z seemed lacking it felt kinda dull, although it had decent power, the deal braker was the technology. I wanted the base 29,000 model but it came with a radio from 1995 that was a joke. To get the full bluetooth integration you had to add the touring package for $4,000 and the tech package for another $3,000 and that was absurd in 2014. Even their cars half the price came with much better electronics.

Then I took the FR-S for a drive, phone paired right uo into the system, car drove & handled great and I got it.

It is fast on the street, when you keep the revs up, but pretty slow on the track, however there are a dozen options for more power and that is the path I will be exploring. I like the the Jackson Racing SC.. might be worth getting

Yea, i had 2013 base, 6 speed with Sport which cost $35K!! And it had NOTHING. An archaic radio, thats it. Youre looking at low $40's to get it CLOSE to the 3.8 Genesis Coupe. Just wasnt worth it to me, im 36, I needed to relax a bit more in my car, while still having the power.

Yea Twins suffer "staggering" times on the track, but so did my Z. At Sebring id put down ok times, pretty good for its class, and I can say the same for BRZ I drove around. Neither car is gonna be setting lap records. But they are FUN!!!

LOL, and you bought an FR-S?

Specs on the RX-8 before they retired it:
Power (SAE): 232 hp @ 8,500 rpm; 159 ft lb of torque @ 5,500 rpm

Have you ever driven a rx-8 or seen the dyno's for bolt on + tune rx8's?!?
I have done both , raced a few, and every time I'm glad I signed the papers to finance a fr-s versus a rx-8...

I have owned three RX-7's and driven numerous RX-8's and considered buying one numerous times. I owned a BRZ. If we are talking stock cars here, the RX-8 and FT86 are very close in terms of power. They are in the same ballpark and to say the RX-8 engine is a joke is rather hypocritical...
