DIY Keyport slide replacement key

If you've never heard of the keyport stop now and head over here: http://mykeyport.com/

It's a keychain replacement that works very well. Holds 6 keys, or 5 plus automotive chip. It's badass.

So if you want to use this with your 86 you'll need some things.

Keyport Slide
Blade #TR47
Automotive chip insert (without the chip, you'll have to call and ask for it)
A donor key (valet works best)
Very sharp razor blade

This is what it looks like in the ignition.

Here you can see the size differences.

Take your time and slowly slice along the edge of the key and pry it open with a screwdriver.

You can start to see the chip. Cut that little bugger out.

Here it is out of the plastic.

Now put it into the vacant space, mine is occupied because I'm swapping it from a different vehicle. And that's it!

Get your blank cut by a good locksmith and you'll be good to go! DO NOT USE THE VALET KEY TO GET CUT OR YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO OPEN YOUR TRUNK!

I've heard bad things about these. Lots of problems with keys breaking, and the immobileizer not being able to read the chip.

I've used it for 2 years now with not a single issue. Never had a car refuse to start either.

Its like those large pens with 4 or more colors built inside that allows you to select the color or the pen by flicking a button.....except for adults.

it looks like those giant USB sticks when they first came out in 2003.

i thought the trend for car keys is smaller the better, so you don't have to stick a brick in everytime you drive.

I could see this being useful for people who have multiple vehicles with multiple keys and keyfobs on their keychains. This would become heavy and cumbersome if you had, say, more than 2 car keys on a single keychain.

Sorry to bump an old thread. When you transferred the chip, did you use glue to make sure it didn't fall out?

By the looks of it, you only have to extend the piece with the chip in it to swap it with another one, looks like you never have to extend it with normal use so I wouldn't glue it.

The slide doubles up as a barcode reader. As a result, the slide goes through prolonged used. I'm just curious as to whether the chip needs to be secured or the mounts hold the chip properly in place.

Just did this with my key, converted to Rav4 or Corrolla key, not sure. I have a 2015 FRS, and the key is different from all of the ones I have seen here. Its a little nicer, but still the Camry key, and I wanted the flip.

Took my time removing the chip: used a stiff blade box cutter, heated it up on medium with a heat gun and cut the external wall of plastic. Then put the box cutter blade behind the chip and it popped right out.

My local locksmith cut the key for $3, and the fob cost to me was $12. Thrilled with the result.
