Solo DL question

Well, I'm thinking more about data logging, and I did some reading on the solo DL. On the Aim website is talks about supporting CAN protocol on our cars. Can anyone tell me about what kinds of fields it is able to collect (beyond the ones you can get over OBDII)? Specifically can it collect really cool stuff like the body control computer's data (so like the car's yaw rates and such) or the steering position or brake pressure?

Here's a screen shot of all the info I get over OBDII with my Solo DL:

So you definitely get steering angle and brake pressure. As for body control stuff, there are fields for Vertical,Lateral, and Longitudinal acceleration from the car and from the GPS. The numbers from the car don't seem to make sense to me (they are usually 3-5g's, which is obviously incorrect) so I'm not sure they are incorrect or if these numbers are measuring something else. The number from the GPS Lat Acc seems correct though. Pulled 1.64g's on track this weekend running Hoosier R6's.

Suction cup it to the bottom left of the windshield. You can see it on left turns in my video:

AiM solo DL FTW. Upgrade to the latest version of Racestudio 2, version 2.54, and it now also includes (finally) oil temp and individual wheel speed channels

yeah, the oil temp was added because of me, i thought it was crazy every 20$ device can log it but not my AIM so i contacted the folks at AIM and they said they needed the PID. There is a thread here on people putting their own programmation in an obd2 reader (can't remember the name) so i sent it to him and they added it. Now i am trying to get them to log the fuel level since there is a PID for that in the same thread. I wish i could have the fuel level on my MXL dash

They sent me the BETA version for testing but our car is still under construction so couldn't do much but seems like others tried it and it worked so they released the 2,54 version.

I hope they will be able to add the fuel level, that would give us the exact amount of fuel needed before the pressure drops.

If you guys can learn to use the racestudio2 and race analysis software, you will gain so much. That tool is what made us win the championship last year since no one had a clue how to make it work b ut we did. Don't use it only as a lap timer.

Those acceleration data are from the Aim Solo DL, not the car. Did you calibrate the unit's internal acclerometers in Race Studio? Even if you do that, I think you will need to adjust the data produced by the Solo because the accels are not at the car's COG, they're in the unit itself. I'm guessing it's best to just use the GPS values.

Cool, thanks! That's something I've been wanting for a while now. I'll definitely update when I get the chance.

I did not know that. I'll look into configuring it and seeing how those number compare with the GPS data.

if you guys want other things or questions to them, don't hesitate, they answer quickly and will do whatever they can to make you happy. i would say that the biggest strength of this company is the customer service for sure.

Also, if you have a chance to take a class with Roger at AIM, do it, you will learn a lot on how to use it and mostly see everything it can do. It is usually free or almost free. i took it two years in a row and it was well worth it.

Great guy. Roger even came to an event of ours the day before a local seminar, which helped many of the drivers even more. The cost for the seminar was $25, a bargain for what you learn.

There's also a book out, Making Sense of Squiggly Lines, by Chris Brown. He breaks data analysis down into plain English and shows you. out of the mass of data available. what's important and why. It's well worth the cost, and something drivers can share among themselves when they're done with it.

This kind of analysis can make a huge difference in driver development if it's properly applied. I think I posted the image below once before in another thread, but it's an example of a screen produced by a piece of data analysis software. It shows the data from a lap laid down by a pro (in red), with that of a student laid over it. (You'll need to expand the image to see the detail.) You can see, graphically, what each driver is doing, and where he's doing it (the x-axis is the distance in feet from the start/finish line). The low-hanging fruit here is how much earlier the pro goes to full throttle in the turns.

RS3 is not out yet and i don't think it will be this year. I beleive the first batch of MXL2 is out but for those that pre-order, not sure they have enough to supply a lot as of now.

Yes you can connect the DL to the obd2 plug

So what kind of a difference is there between the MXL2 and the Solo DL? The Aim site is a little sparse on details. I fact I had to google to even find the product page; the main site only seems to have the MXL listed.
