Source? ME!!!

lol, so you define a sports car by what a book says. LAME!!!

i define it on how it feels and drives.

any real enthusiast knows a sports car is RWD or AWD. there is a reason why they make FWD cars. its cheaper and economical.

FWD cars are "psuedo-sports cars", not sports cars by definition.

If you want to build a sportscar (from scratch), you'd build it with the engine closer to the center or at the back, as RWD or eventually AWD. FWD sprotscars are a result of constraints that are costly to overcome. Sports cars are about the best layout as long constraints permit it or can be overcome, FWD is not the best layout. Again a 100 PS sports car does not need to be RWD...

Conjecture.

Contradictory statement. In the event that you're goal is to make a 100-120hp sports car that's affordable and light wouldn't FWD work better as you're going suffer less drive-train loss and the vehicle will also be lighter? Since 100PS doesn't need to be RWD, that stand to reason a FWD layout is the best layout for a 100PS sports car.

Nothing in the definition of sports car says it has to be very powerful.

By your definition a 3 wheeled vehicle, be it FWD or RWD, could be a sports car. Just by how it feels when you drive it.

I agree with you though. I definitely feel a FWD car can be classified as a sports car if it feels like a sports car.

Ahhh yes. Now the purpose of my post becomes clear. A good old controversial debate.

I think my point is, there aren't many true to the bone FWD purpose built sports cars.

Plenty of sporty re-purposed family hatchback/salons, but few thoroughbreds.

An M3 is arguably a sup'ed up executive salon. BMW didn't make a sports car and then down tune it into a 318i did they?

A "Sports Car" is intended to be for participation in motorsports.

Ask yourself this question: "Would anyone knowledgeable in automotive engineering ever START with FWD if 'racing' was the intent?"

I say - No.
It's that simple. If the car has FWD, then the primary design criteria was NOT for "participation in motorosports"

And if you want a real sports car, then it is mid-engine RWD :-)
