Perrin Inlet Hose & Sound tube delete
Hey all! Today I finally did a minor modification to my BRZ and wanted to share my impressions...
The install today was a Perrin Inlet Hose which meant a sound tube delete was in the making. The installation was VERY easy for those who are like me and aren't much for tinkering on their own vehicles... In fact the hardest part was retrieving a damn socket that decided to fall into the smallest crevice ever. Had that not occurred, I'd bet my total install time was closer to 15 minutes rather than the 45 it actually took. My first impressions after taking the car out? WOW... I did not realize how much sound that the sound tube pumped through the firewall. Having that tube capped/removed really seemed to refine the car and I believe will make the daily driving more comfortable. No offense to those who like it but I haven't found the FA20 to be the most beautiful sounding engine at high revs. This sound tube removal was something I wish I had looked into a long time ago because now all I hear is the sweet sweet sound of my Perrin exhaust! Performance wise I'll be as honest as Perrin and say that the small gains that were provided by this and my Perrin filter (which was installed only a few days ago) were not huge; however, it could be placebo where I feel my car is a bit more responsive. The torque dip; while still there, isn't as depressing as before. Also, the car does feel like its breathing better which is exactly what this setup was supposed to provide. All that being said, I'm very happy with my purchase! The Perrin inlet cleaned up the engine bay and also provided a little bit of weight loss as it removed what I'll refer to as "crap" that wasn't really needed. The small enhancement of power/torque from the filter and inlet isn't going to be all that noticeable; however, I can feel a more responsive result of their being installed. Just the sound tube delete was worth it in the end so this was a plus plus! To conclude, for a small modification to my daily driver I'm very happy! Thanks to Perrin for another great quality product, and finally kudos to FT86Speedfactory.com for superfast shipping with LaffyTaffy! I had heard great things about them and I'm very pleased with my transaction! Hopefully this bit of information will help those who are looking for a small time modification! Thanks all! - Kimsey

Looks good! That and a drop-in air filter are my next mods for sure.

Curious - did you remove the Sound tube all the way to the Firewall or capped it as per instructions from ft86speedfactory?

Thanks for the details - mine is in the mail. Did you also plug the interior hole at all?

I capped it per the instructions. The cap seemed to fit a bit loose so I'll probably put a zip tie around it to ensure it always stays in place.

I thought I saw some older posts noting that removing the sound generator caused a loss in power. Does the Perrin tube somehow avoid this?

Not sure how the sound tube would make you lose power. Im intrigued... I have the Perrin inlet hose and if there is a difference, it's not noticeable.

I read that somewhere also. test run on dyno & record - plugged the sound tube - re reran dyno test - lost 1 hp.
real or just a fluke? or a function of some other variable. dunno. I don't know how a dyno test can be that exact to pick up 1 hp loss. too many other variables. My vote is to remove it and install the perin as above. |

Perhaps the claim to losing HP was the "I can't hear the engine noise as much so I must have lost power" because the car just feels more spirited to me. (And quiet without the tube)

mishimoto showed the sound generator killed power while the resonator added power. theres a big long thread about it that keeps popping up.

Nice inlet tube, man! I recently did mine as well as the Perrin CAI (which was a pain in the ass time wise but not a headache like trying to get at the overpipe which I gave up on). I noticed a huge difference in power delivery, how is it with the inlet tube only? Curious because I may remove my CAI during wetter months.
