This is the thread I was talking about. Obviously nothing is confirmed, but I feel like the evidence is pretty strong. Plus, Toyota will have to do something to compete with the 2015 Mustang Ecoboost.
I think the '16 will see small changes like the '15. The '17 will be the "real" refresh with the platform running 8 years. JMHO.

I also think that Toyota doesn't care much about the Ecoboost Mustang. It is a much larger, heavier car with the Ecoboost being a premium engine over the largely carryover V6. The Mustang sells over 3x the volume of the twins in general. It can more easily justify multiple power trains. Also, the Genesis coupe has offered a 2.0T for a while and that didn't change them from only offering a 2.0NA. The Genesis 2.0T was just cancelled, too.

I feel like this is a big step up(seriously). Maybe we will see great changes for the 2017 model which will most likely involve me trading in my '13 for the '17.

The Mustang is already a great car for the money, and you can bet the 2015 will perform better in every way. The Ecoboost will be 25,995 which is very competative with the FRS. Not to mention the Mustang will be available in Europe now.

I think Toyota would be silly not to care about the new Mustang. Aside from the ND Miata, I think the Ecoboost will be the car most frequently compared to the FRS/BRZ.

I saw this as well. While I agree some changes are going to be there, I don't see anything that will be drastic in terms of a front fascia facelift.

Look at the Mazda Miata or Honda S2000. I don't think they received any significant facelifts besides (some minor ones sure), obviously, more power and interior changes.

I think that will be the same for the FRS/BRZ. Just my opinion though.

Say what? Could be a whole lot worse as at least most of the surfaces are soft and not hard plastic. Look at the early years of the new Challenger if you want to see terrible...

You can't mess with perfection.

Doubt they'll be comparable as they're still going to be a far larger car, far heavier, and of questionable build quality. ND Miata is definitely a threat depending on the real specs and how it looks.

V6 Mustangs are compared to everything though. It's easily dollar for dollar the most power for your money. The new one might mess that up as it's not released yet.

Miata is a mixed bag. For instance the NB is split into the NB1 and NB2 with the NB1 only being made for 2 years (different front bumper, headlights, fog lights, tail lights, and the last of the non-variable valve timing engines that only need normal gasoline).

Unless sales slip because of competition, there's not much reason for them to mess with the twins.

My point was that being a turbo 4 doesn't change anything with the Mustang as far as being a competitor. The V6 is cheaper and already existed when the FR-S came out. If the Mustang dropped considerable weight, I'd sing a different tune.

Other than price, I just don't see the Mustang as a legitimate comparison here.
You have the uberlight twins with near perfect handling balance, then you have a heavy, softly-sprung domestic with more power and crappy build quality.

But..If you are seriously shopping the two, you just might be happier with the Mustang. Especially if you think the world revolves around smoking the tires at each stoplight.

Just not my thing. At all.

One is a muscle car and one is a sports car. There's nothing necessarily wrong with either class, but they're two different things. Do you want knife-edge precision through windy canyon roads, or do you want to lay a smokey patch of rubber in a glorious show of brute force?

Precisely, and well said.
That's why I don't understand the supposed cross-shopping.
They are designed and intended for 2 distinct things.

I think you guys might be surprised. I feel like the turbo-4 will attract of lot of people that normally don't go for domestic cars. It's pretty much what a modern day Silvia would be if Nissan decided to make one. A turbo, rwd, and 4 cylinder engine is still a really desirable combination in a car. Sure the Genesis had that, but the car lacked fit and finish. Ford has a lot riding on this car, I feel like it's going to be really dialed in.

I also think that Ford knows what kind of people will be attracted to the SVO model, and if they can work the same magic that they did on the Focus ST and Fiesta ST, then the call will be an instant winner.

Because the average consumer won't do either of those things. They want something to go to work or school in, go out in, etc... The mustang is probably better for that. Easier power, softer suspension, more room, still looks very nice.
