That's the polyurethane color coating peeling from the leather substrate. "Leather" steering wheels in cheaper models are wrapped with a lower quality leather which has the imperfect grain sanded off, and a plastic coating and grain pattern stamped on...the plastic coating contributes to the plastic-y texture in the FRS/Camry and other Toyota leather trimmed steering wheels and also is supposed to increase durability. Apparently, there's been some issues with the durability of the "leather" steering wheels - a few other members have posted with similar issues. Dealer will replace under warranty.
Looking closely at the picture, it seems that there's been a lot of wear to the steering wheel - there's some abrasion to the raised part of the grain. How many miles does your car have? |

That's pretty low mileage for "normal wear and tear", unless you remember scratching it with a ring. They would probably replace it under warranty for you.

I'm a single d00d, got no ring on this finger
![]() Good to know, lol I was thinking of using some 2000 grit sand paper or something. I'll drive 30 miles to the dealer and tell them to replace my wheel in that case! |

I figured it was a finger nail scratch from white knuckle moment. Hope they replace it for you.

Hopefully there will be some nice aftermarket wheel options that will become more affordable in the future. The Tom's Carbon fiber and black nappa leather wheel looks really nice for this car.

Update:
Took the car into Toyota of Jacksonville. Toyota called me about a week later and denied my claim. They said they did a check, nobody else is reporting to have this problem. Looks like I'm screwed.... |

Looks like a reason to upgrade to an Alcantara streering wheel.
