DRONE!!! full exhaust

Hey guys!

I just installed: EL nameless header - DP/OP 2.5 Nameless catted and resonated - Perrin 3" catback resonated

Sound is fantastic... BUT it start droning from 3,5k rpm as soon as I go WOT and it never ends till the redline : /

Any idea? Is it normal? I believed that the Perrin resonated even if 3" was kinda tamed and almost drone free.

Right now I'm seriously considering having the stock catback put on again because the drone is too annoying.

Could it takes a bit of time to settle down maybe?
Is it possivle that the exhaust touch somewhere and produce the drone?

I thought drone was at a stabilized RPM. Such as driving down the freeway at 70mph (112km/hour) and the exhaust note gets loud, or loud and hollow sounding. Engines get loud at wide open throttle at high RPMs. I don't believe that is drone, that is noise. What you're describing sounds like loud exhaust. Fix: don't drive at wide open throttle.

I didn't even catch that. Now that I reread it, I completely agree.

I have the Nameless 3 inch OP/DP combo with straight through resonator and helmholtz resonator and Perrin resonated 3 inch cat back. I ran it with a Borla UEL header for a while. It was great. Loud and rumbly past about 3k rpms.

OP if you want to make it quieter, go with the Perrin 2.5 inch resonated cat back

Also, after a while all exhaust systems will quiet up a bit, drone will be less.

Once the inside of the exhaust system gets coated with carbon and soot, the sound gets softer and drone became less on my last car.

Drone is weird sometimes. I've seen two identical exhausts on the same type of cars that were very different.

I have FB Premium stage 1 (header pipes are of thicker, different stainless) turbo kit, Nameless 3'' catless front/overpipe, Tomei 80r titanium exhaust, and while it is loud, there is zero drone at any rpm.

I also think on our cars that cam timing/tune can affect the drone a LOT. A different tune might be all that's needed to eliminate, or alter the drone.

For a turbo car the Perrin 3 inch seems to be a good set up. For a regular 86, the Corsa catback is the best setup.

Disclaimer: I don't own either; just from sound clips I have heard of all of them neither the Perrin nor the Corsa have drone.

What people refer to as drone is gnerally resonence, this is where one or more components of the exhaust are excited into occilations at the resonent frequency. This generally happns in an rpm band where the vibrations producd by engine or exhaust pulses are around the resonant frequency of one or more of the components.

If your unlucky or exhaust is porly designed it may happn in one or two rpm ranges, resonators are desigend to absorb or dampen these osilations.

Unfortunatly when you use components from several manufacturers its possible you have been very unlucky and although th individual components are fine the combination is the problem and may have changed the resonant frequencys away from the frequencys the resonator were originally designed to counteract.

You could try different resonators, it seems unusual the resonance is over such a large rpm range might also be worth checking thee mountings and clearances to ensure no part of the exhaust is not rubbibg or vibrating on the chassis or suspension components.

I believe is rubbing or vibrating somewhere... It must be... because it's like a metallic vibration that start when the rpm increase and it keeps doing it. Like when you place a super small bolt in a metallic box and you make it vibrate inside of it.

I'm freaking out now, because the mechanic that did the work is out for 2 weeks and I'm worried it could create some problem if it's hitting or rubbing somewhere, hope not.

yes definitly sounds like it a mechanical problem , its likely an easy fix .If your going to do a lot of driving its probably worth getting someone (or you) to look at it sooner.

I remember when I first installed my catted front pipe and 3" Perrin it was really loud for the first two days but after that it got a lot quieter
