Just went last december. Did a package from costco which included flight, rental car, and hotel plus free upgraded room and free breakfast brunch everyday. This was for Oahu. Total days spent was 5.

if you've never been to Hawaii, then probably Oahu (Honolulu/Waikiki) is the best island to go for your first time. More of the touristy stuff to do like go to a luau, eat shaved ice, visit Pearl Harbor, shop for souvenirs LOL. The other islands are more remote, less nightlife etc. So they're more appropriate for a romantic getaway or if you just want to chill on a beach and not have much of an agenda.

During a week-long stay in Oahu, I think the best day I had though was the day we rented a car and just drove all the way around the island (which can be done in about 3-4 hours), stopping wherever we felt like it.

All good tips from others. Costco deals are on their website. If you have the costco Amex, you can get even sweeter deals. If you do end up in Honolulu, I'd avoid renting a car, parking is super expensive and is even worse than SF imho. I'd just take the bus (the transit is called "The Bus") or do what I usually do, rent a scooter.

^This, if you really want all the touristy stuff, then Honolulu. I happen to hate all that, so i avoid it. Maui or Kauai for me. I usually end up in the big island too when I do go since I've got family there (free room and food! ).

@BlaineWasHere

Too bad you won't be able to see this anymore if you will be going to Oahu:

They got rid of it and turned it into a Saks Fifth Avenue.

Can visit the following places if you go to Oahu:

Good food truck!

Expect it to unexpectedly rain:

If you prefer to drink alcoholic beverages, this location does not sell any:

There are more places you can visit. Also, I went during the week of July 4th....super crowded (places and freeways) and humid.

I got a rental, convert camero and it was worth it. Parking does cost money, especially overnight at the hotels but it gave us the freedom to roam and take our time around the island. we did the south to north shores in about half a day, taking our time and stopping at about 7-8 stops.

It also allowed us to live farther away from the downtown area. We like to be a little more private and quiet.

Agreed, cruising the H1 was awesome, even in the tiny fiesta we rented. I can't imagine how awesome it was in a convertible. I'd say rent a scooter if you are planning on just staying in the touristy Honolulu area.

So damn tired that I just stalled my car for the first time ever while parking it after lunch. Guess I thought it was out of gear but it was actually in 1st still when I took my foot completely off the clutch. But then I looked down and it was in neutral. Must have just caught the gear on it's way out.

I should just be happy it didn't violently lurch forward enough before dieing to slam the curb!

Mondays... er.. Tuesdays.

That @HIddenCash guy should hide money up at Alice's or Mt. Hamilton so I can get a drive in for this treasure hunt!

Also, @PMok have you tried out any of the Griot's detailing supplies that you won at the raffle?
