There's no replacement for dusplacement
Well, I guess that old saying can now be considered completely debunked. 525 HP and 442 lbft from 2300 rpm to 6000 rpm from just 2.5L. If that truly is a production ready engine that is expected to live a long and fruitful life on just standard maintenance, you can color me impressed.

It doesn't, it has to do with the exhaust piping (and intake piping) and the engine's configuration. The number of cylinders and valve train determines the sound, adding a ton more displacement barely changes the amplitude of the sound. Physics, learn it.
