Transmission is damn hot...

I was doing some quite spirited driving yesterday, and kept thinking my heat was on, which I was checking and it was on the coldest setting (without AC). After a while a notuiced the shifter was actually getting pretty warm, and then I put my hand down by the transmission and the floor and everything was QUITE toasty.

I know this car is pretty low to the ground and the transmission is basically sitting beside you, but this is the first time I noticed this. I was driving around town with a lot of 0-60 pulls going on. Has anyone else noticed this? I'd assume it's normal and I just never noticed it.

Outside temp was about 18*c.

A quick run down the 102 should cool her off. It's a nice day for a run to Truro anyway.

I live down the 103, that cooled er off pretty good! Suprised at the presence of Atlantic Canadians on here!

I've been considering changing my fluid to something a bit more "performance" and recently have really contemplated not driving my car next winter so some Redline or Gear 300 might be in order. I know that won't help with the temps...

Don't forget that the exhaust runs under there too, so that'll heat up a bunch when you're pushing it harder.

Seeings how FI kits like Ptuning run a turbo literally right beside tranny it has to be no concern really.

The transmission is no where near your hands. Its next to your feet. Remember the outputshaft is near the shifter and the transmission is foreward of that. Underish the radio. The heat was probably your exhaust. Rhd?

Left hand drive. And good point, I forgot you can see most of the tranny under the hood. I could literaly feel the heat coming off of the...shaft that shifter is connected too. Like under the shift boot was pretty warm.

It doesn't look like this should be much of a concern! I'd say some of the heat was being generated from the exhaust as well...

On that note once have car on jackstands again take a boo. If you pop off drive shaft lots of room to work there, you could easily install some thermal barrier if you wanted to, easy to clean that area prior to installation and also would be easy to apply. I plan this next winter on spraying on some MLV Zero noise and thermal barrier in that tunnel area myself.

Not sure if changing the transmission fluid would help any. I may change mine before the snow, mine was bought with the intention of driving year round.
