Best for me, MK1 MR2. You could almost shift gears in it with just your wrist.

Absolute worse car, Ferrari Daytona. The clutch was heavy, felt like it came out of an old 18 wheeler, and the throw was huge. Only drove one though, so I suppose it could have been a bad example.

Agreed sir. Nothing I have ever driven shifts as well as my Mazdaspeed.

My friend's e21 requires an astrolabe and a knowledge of star patterns in the northern hemisphere to find first gear. It's a little worse for wear.

I agree with this statement. Honda's transmissions are direct, smooth, and effortless. Even a tame V6 Accord's 6 speed has the characteristics of a performance-oriented Honda. They definitely know how to build a transmission at Honda. I could only hope for the BRZ to be that close.

Worst one for me would have to be a 73 de tomaso pantera heavy clutch and could only drive it for about 45 mins before it would astray overheating plus half the gauged didn't work buy what a beautiful car and I did enjoy how rewarding it is to shift a supercar since that's a thing of the past.

Most of the highly rated cars here seem to be Japanese sports cars that make use of Aisins 6spd FR transmissions. In fact, more specifically, the Aisin AZ6 which is present in the Mazda Miata, Honda s2000, Nissan Silvia Spec-R, Toyota Altezza, and Mazda RX8 (among others Im sure).

This Aisin AZ6 is what is purportedly used as the transmission of choice for the FT86, however it could easily be the AY6 since I havent seen part numbers or the transmission casing up close to confirm.

**Transmission Fun Fact: Even though Honda famously refuses to use anything but its own transmissions for most of its cars, they manned up and went with the Aisin AZ6 for use in the s2000. And it is of course one of the best (if not the best) shifting Honda vehicle to ever be produced.

In Honda's defense, they made a lot of proprietary changes.

I actually don't like the clanky, mechanical feel that the S2K gives you. The best one I've tried was the previous generation Miata (2005) followed closely by the Evo IX. The newer Miata and the newer Evo X are a little more clanky. Aisin is the company who makes the manual transmission in the Miatas, RX-8, and S2K and they will be making the tranny for the FR-S/BRZ as well so it should be pretty good but I've heard a few knocks against it from reviewers. I am interested in how it will feel.
