Just adding some input here.

I had mine on a switch originally and was just leaving it off unless I needed it, well I didnt need it so fuck it, I cut it. No more VSS since like Sept/Oct, no need for it as of yet.

Also not sure if any of you have run into this problem but from what I can tell people who have the update for the GPS antennae will not be able to do the bypass. I have not done the update otherwise I would work on some other ways of getting around that.

On a similar note I am currently working on adding an additional video input to the radio which should allow me to do some pretty cool stuff, ill update here as soon as I sort out all of that.

Bringing this back. I just bought my brz in April 2014. Where / how do I check my navi version to see if the VSS switch will work??

Thanks please quote me for the answer so I don't lose this thread.

I believe you can't disable it. It doesn't work on mine.

If your hu had been updated then unplugging the gps antenna in the back of the hu, along with grounding the e brake and the vss switch, seems to the only way to play movies while driving. I wonder if you could also add a switch to the gps antenna? ?

I have not tried the phone will driving yet but see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Also, for grounding the e brake wire, it is much easier to lift the boot on the e brake itself unplug and ground on the 10mm bolt near by. Also remove mt shifter boot to get to bolt.

Unplugging the gps antenna stops the gps from working at all so if a switch could be added there too would be great. But i dint think we will ever be able to use gps functions while moving. ..

I don't think this is what you want to do. You are really just trying to ground the E-brake signal going into the HU, not the signal to the entire car. Grounding the wire on the E-brake will tell the ECU that the parking brake is on and will make your dash indicator light up...not what you want.

The E-brake bypass is for movies. The VSS bypass is for all the other restrictions that the HU imposes while moving. I'm not familiar with the implications of the NAV update, but this is how it works for the 2013 BRZ/FRS.

Another thing. The accepted way to do the VSS bypass on most(I think the pioneers may operate differently) Toyotas is to provide a pulse to the HU rather than to ground the wire. The reason for this is that in many HUs are smart enough to know what you are doing. If it looses VSS information but the GPS detects motion, it will lock you out of the speed-sensitive features after a couple minutes. The pulse must be tuned to be a low enough frequency to tell the HU that the vehicle speed is slower than the 3 MPH threshold which will leave the features unlocked. Someday I'll do a write-up on what I did(I used a 555 timer to produce the pulse).

Some HU's may work differently but I'm basing this on what the Fujisu-Ten unit does in my 13' BRZ.

I put a switch on VSS (only because it was my first move in trying to get movies on while driving), use a small nut that fits around the button sensing the e brake and unplugged gps antenna. so basically, I use my phone if I need gps, and remove the nut so the driving lights stay on and put the nut in when I want the dvd to play. This is hardly technical stuff but it works for me.

I believe the movie functionality is only based on the E-brake input to the headunit. If that's true, all you need to do is ground that wire. There are multiple ways to do that. This harness does that as part of a backup camera installation: http://www.autoharnesshouse.com/19867.html
