Since day 1, it has been difficult to get into 2nd when cold, grinds 3rd slightly, and grinds 4th above 5-6K RPM every time, even when warm. This is not speed/power shifting, I don't do that, just during normal operation. So, Mark Miller Midtown is replacing the transmission for me. They're also putting Motul 300 in the tranny and diff while they're at it. I supplied the upgraded oil. Their service department has been absolutely outstanding. When I reported the transmission issue, they got me right in and the service manager went for a ride with me and confirmed the problem. Within 30 minutes, he had contacted SOA and had my transmission on order. Unfortunately, an exhaust bolt broke during the transmission replacement and had to be ordered. Otherwise I would've had the car back in 1 day.

I really believe that the issues are caused by the GL-3 that Subaru uses. The other car manufacturers that use this Aisin tranny use GL-5 fluid and are not known to have issues. Makes you wonder.

Let me know what you find out. There are plenty of posts about the grinding but no good solutions so far. It shouldn't be a parts issue since the parts are common with other cars. The only difference that I could find is the fluid used.

Yes, the IS350 uses GL-5, I'd assume the 250 does too.

And Subaru has a sign on the service counter that says, "All fluid is not created equal" and yet they refuse to fill with Subaru Extra-S (which is awesome GL-5 gear oil) from the factory, or stock it at the 99% of dealerships.

Well its weird that toyota would put GL-3 in the 86 and say in a TSB for the same tranny GL-5 in a CAUTION...seems like a tech data violation to me

Sounds like it to me too. I could get into a rant about execs wanting to save the $80 per car on the fluid and being so short sighted to not see the $5000 tranny replacements as a result of the desire to make a quick buck... But I won't.

Better be safe than sorry
