Scion FR-S sedan coming in 2016 with a turbocharged engine - report

Quote:
FR-S Convertible due in October

There have been a lot of contradictory rumors about the Toyota GT 86 / Scion FR-S sedan and convertible but Motor Trend is reporting both are slated for production.

According to their sources, the company will introduce the FR-S convertible in October. This suggests the car could be the all-new model that Scion Vice President Doug Murtha recently confirmed for the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Regardless, the model was previewed by the GT 86 Open concept and speculation suggests it will weigh at least 60 lbs (27 kg) more than the coupe. While it is expected to use the familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that develops 200 bhp (149 kW), it should have a retuned suspension to compensate for the added weight.

In 2016, the company is expected to offer a GT 86 / FR-S sedan. It will reportedly be 20 inches (508mm) longer than the coupe and have a 4 inch (101mm) taller roofline. While the car doesn't sound particularly roomy, one designer told the magazine it will comfortably seat four adults.

Power will reportedly be provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops more than 300 bhp (223 kW). There are also rumors about an all-wheel drive hybrid variant that could cost approximately $50,000.

wondering if it's actually a sedan doors, or maybe the rx8 style door? you know Mazda had something very interesting going on there, not sure why we haven't seen many others like that.

Hopefully it isn't like the veloster. Not a fan of the 2 doors only on one side.

Even if any of these articles are true, those price points are ridiculous....

This feels like a 1/10 on the plausibility scale.
The price points leave no market, the timeline makes no sense, and this goes against everything that has been said in the past.
A convertible could happen, but not in the next 5 months. The sedan described would surely be a new model, not an FR-S, if it happened.

As there are so many reports to dispute everything in this article, hope remains alive that there's something brewing because the Toyota dealerships that didn't opt out of Scion were told they would get new Scion cars to sell. Keep in mind Toyota Motor Sales vice president Paul Holdrige said there wouldn't be any new Scion models until 2016.

Rumor mill is picking up again:

oh my God the mods need to start taking care of these threads

Japan’s No. 1 carmaker will round out the FR-S lineup starting with a soft-top convertible by October 2014 and a 4-door sedan in 2016.
We already know for a fact that this is not true. They have started production of 2015 FR-S and there is no convertible. I hate this kind of reporting

Scion FR-S Soft-Top Convertible and Four Door

The more I read these articles, the happier I am that I got my 2014 FRS. It seems like every FRS evolution that hits the rumor mill is getting farther away from what the current FRS is.

1) If I had wanted a roadster, I would have bought (another) Miata.

2) Mid to high $30s will buy you a really nice 370Z.
