Excellent! Heavy and pointless if you're the only one driving the car.

As far as ideal, I think they pretty much hit the nail on the head with their concept; I would just want to add a supercharger to flirt with the 300hp mark:

My ideal BRZ STi:
  • RWD
  • NA
  • - 200lbs
  • + 50hp

Edit: Just realized the above specs matches my s2k. lol But I cant fit wheels in the s2k & it doesn't have any creature comforts.

That sounds perfect to me. Whether they work over the FA20 or make a FA25. I would probably prefer the potential benefits of a FA25.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to love my N/A 200hp BRZ.

And a N/A 250hp STI that weighs less would be even cooler.

But I think a low compression FA25 with a positive displacement blower would be awesome. 300+ hp, instant boost. It would need flared fenders for wider tires, especially in the rear. And a CF roof to get the CG back down to where it should be after mounting the blower.

I'd pay Impreza STI money for that.

It's not unthinkable. TRD has plenty of experience with supercharging engines with good results. I see it being a limited edition car, but probably not mass-produced like the STi.

A potential "FA25" would not rev as high unless it's more worked over than the FA20 would be. More torque on the low-end though, which us Americans like.

300 nm of torque at 2500 rpm, that is all

If the target is 250hp, then the revs will stay the same with an FA25, and given the basic engine design, the low end torque will still suck, but will be marginally improved. 2.5 is quite a change in displacement though, not sure that would happen.

To appeal to the American armchair racer they'd shoot for a higher hp number rather than try to do anything about low end torque, and I would happen to like it that way

Sure. But I would sacrifice some revs. Imagine a potential FA25 with 250-260hp and 190-200 lb-ft NA engine with a redline of ~8000. It probably would be cheaper just to work the FA20 instead of a new engine in a FA25. But I can dream can't I?

How is 8000rpm sacrificing revs?

I just remembered that the 370Z Nismo or something has its redline unchanged but torque moved a little higher for more power. Perhaps it would be easier for Subaru to increase the rev limit to a more modest 8000 rather than 8500, and then move the power peak to 7600 or so, which would get us something like 220hp peak if the torque stays the same. If they do some intake tuning or whatever to get the peak torque a little higher, 230-240 would not be too hard. The downside to peak power being close to the limiter would be a slightly narrower "powerband".

But damn, 8500 rpm just sounds so good T_T

I think a 2.5L at 7500 rpm is very possible and could make 250+hp without much issue if they keep what they learned with the FA20.
