Oh I agree with you on that, it was more of a "what if" scenario.

fsho...

the way i see it, if a person was unlucky/dumb enough to get their car stolen, it probably would have happened sooner or later...

Toyota/Lexus/Scion systems are fantastic, and the only really valid complaint I've ever heard from people who have used and understood them is that the keys are expensive.

The key's range is very specific. If you are standing at the driver's door, it can be unlocked, the trunk/passenger door cannot. If you are at the trunk, you can open the trunk; the doors will not unlock. You can have the driver's door open and be standing right there, and reach in and push the button, but the key is NOT inside the car, so it cannot be started. There is a mechanical key that can open the door or trunk if the remote's battery dies. You can hold the key up to the start button for a few seconds if its battery is dead and start the car. You cannot turn the car off while driving unless you hold the button for 3 seconds. If the key leaves the car while it is on, it audibly and visibly notifies you, both on the dash and beeps three times. In my opinion, the car should not turn off if the key is removed, mainly based on the key dying while driving, or similar. Sure you could maybe restart the car, but a car should never spontaneously turn off, it's unsafe.

Jeff
Two other bonus features you get with these systems (at least it works this way in an Altima):

1) You can leave the car running, but locked, with the key in your pocket. Good if you forget something in the house and need your keys.
2)If you only have one key with the car, you can't lock the key in the passenger cabin or in the trunk. The doors and trunk will refuse to lock.

I believe the Subaru system works the same way, based on what I read in the manual.

In all honesty, i really like how the Altima's system works. It's really convenient too especially during heavy rain. Just hit the button on the door and get it

I never tried to lock the car with the engine running, not sure if it's working on my car.

Anyway - looking at the data about the 3rd-party system - it looks like it only uses 2 antennas, which would cover all the vehicle - outside and inside.
Thus, the concern about someone being able to start the car if you're close by seems valid, for this system. Another reason to prefer the OEM, with it's 6 antennas (3 for inside, the only ones that would allow an engine start).

Here's the clip I was thinking of, starting at 3:15. Probably staged particularly given the distance between the car and the key, now that I rewatch it. Should start at the right point assuming the &start tag works.

Could very well be staged (as most TopGear scenes). Or maybe it's a bad design (there is no reason for such a long range, other than incompetent design, IMHO).
(yes, it worked)

Yea, I watched this a couple of years ago, so didn't remember the range being so far away. That's a little much even for a bad design.

well hello there,

I was playing around with the statistics tool on YouTube (for my push start video) and voila, I magically ended up here, in this discussion thread!

I have read through all of your comments and there are legitimate concerns from both sides, but so far the push start system has worked great for me! Please keep in mind that I do NOT work for Advanced Keys, and as such I am not trying to sell their product. The product pretty much speaks for itself and I am one happy camper!

Please do let me know if you guys have any questions and I'll try my best to answer them, as I do have a first hand experience with this system. I just love being at the forefront of technology and inspiring others

cheers!

Welcome!
A first question, probably the most important one: could you confirm if you can start the engine with the keys outside? (just take care how you test it ). A very rough estimate of the distance would also help, but I don't expect anything like what we saw in the (probably staged, different system) Top Gear movie.

thanks for the warm welcome =]

To answer your question, yes, you can start the engine with the keys outside the car provided that the keys are within the detection range of either of the main antennas (I installed 1 antenna in the front behind my A pillar and 1 antenna in the rear inside the trunk behind the trunk liner on the driver's side)

The 2 main antennas have a maximum detection range of roughly 5-6 ft. which really is not a lot...I have to stand pretty much right next to my driver's side door for the key to be detected...if you are even a couple inches outside of the antenna's detection range, then you wouldn't be able to start the car

Also, this is also assuming that someone is already in the driver's seat and you're standing literally right next to them....then yes, they could start the car

However, for remote start, you can start it from pretty far away (same range as an OEM keyfob when unlocking your doors from a distance)

Also, as a failsafe, there is a backup antenna that is mounted near the front windshield that can be used in case your electronic key fails (e.g. breaks or runs out of battery) There is a RFID card that I carry around in my wallet (same size including thickness, as a credit card) that you can use to unlock your doors and enable the ignition if necessary (just place the RFID card next to the emergency bypass antenna near the front windshield...maximum detection range for this bypass antenna is 1 inch)

All in all, it is pretty hard for someone to steal your car and drive off without you standing right there next to your car (even for remote start, your car doors stay locked until you approach you car and either one of the two main antennas detect your electronic key
