We don't have FR-S in Finland but Toyota GT86 costs 12k€ more than BRZ at the moment (35k vs. 47k). That's crazy..

Also the WRB color is awesome.

So this is really old thread that I didn't read all the way through, but I'll participate anyway. I had a positive reason and a negative reason:

Negative - I hate Scions. I hate their branding. I think most of their cars are butt ugly. For whatever reason, the people who buy them seem to be hipsters or wannabe gangstas with obnoxiously loud stereos. And I think the fake carbon fiber crap on the FR-S lacks any degree of taste, as if a teenager wearing a backwards baseball cap took a nice car and spent all his Burger King wages ricing it up. So, generally, I did not want a Scion.

Positive - I read an article talking about the way the stock suspensions were set up on the GT86, FR-S and BRZ, by someone who had driven all three versions. He said that the Toyotas were set up for drifting, while the BRZ was set up to hug corners. I grew up at a time when sliding around turns on pavement was considered "doing it wrong." I learned to drive in an MGB, which squats down into the turns, and I wanted a balanced sports car that handled like a go kart. The BRZ seemed to fit that bill.

Between these two considerations, I never even bothered driving an FR-S.

I paid more than I wanted, $25.9k with 9k miles for the BRZ limited in WRB

It was the only WRB I could find within 150 miles, and I had to have it so it wasn't a deal breaker. The dealer wouldn't budge a penny.

The FRS is cool, but I wanted Alcantara, HID headlights, Nav, and I loved the DRL's on the BRZ. All in all, I just liked the front end on the BRZ more than the FRS. I know I could've saved a buttload of money getting an FRS, but WRB exclusive on the BRZ made it worth it.

When I first drove it, I wasn't THAT impressed since I had the dealer rep sitting next to me and I couldn't flog it. I thought the clutch was too light and it just wasn't fast. I bought it anyway. Then the hour I drove it after buying it.. I had a huge grin on my face the entire way. This car is so much damn fun.

Subaru.
Scion dealership tried to give me 6.9% APR. Subaru gave me .9%.
HID's
Front bumper
Winter tire storage (for 3 years)
First 3 oil changes free
Subaru trunk liner and wheel locks free (because car was delivered with 1/2 tank of gas. I raised hell.)

1. Because it is a scion and associated with a younger more clueless crowd. Not all scion owners are tasteless asshats, but as a group they have a reputation and I don't want to associate with that.
2. Corollary with 1, I am a subaru nerd since I had a GD sti.
3. Nicer interior
4. HID lighting

I'm a fan of Subaru and love the rally-bred history of Subaru...and of course...the world rally blue color!
I was about to go with the FRS because it was cheaper but Scion feels like such a niche brand for young people and I figure everyone is going to buy the FRS which is true now they're everywhere in my city. So BRZ it was!

As sad as it is. I live in a world people judge you by your brand choices. I'm too cowardly so I paid more hoping not to be confused with a little racer boy.

In many (if not most) cases the FR-S not actually cheaper. The list on the BRZ is usually a few hundred dollars more than the comparable model FR-S. However, the Subaru dealers are more willing/able to deal, and Scion has that "Pure Price" ripoff that either prevents them from dealing or is used to avoid dealing on the price. If you look at a site like Edmunds to see the average prices actually being paid for the car, in many areas the out-the-door price is cheaper for the BRZ. In my area, the average BRZ was being sold for $1700 less than the Scion with the comparable trim package.

It's just another insult to the intelligence of the customer on the part of Scion. They draw in people who are afraid of negotiating and use that fear to convince them they're getting a better deal, when they most definitely are not. It's a testament to their marketing that they have managed to get their customer base to vehemently insist they paid less for their cars, when they didn't.

Family has always owned Toyota when we came to Canada, so I wanted to change that (Camry, Venza). Didn't even know what a Scion was before the FR-S haha.

Went for the limited as well because I felt the upgrades were well worth the money. Maybe excluding the spoiler, but it definitely grew on me so I'm fine with it in the end.

This was one of the reasons why I opted to go with Subaru.

I didn't know you can't haggle price down at Scion. As soon as I was aware of it, I just walked away from the Scion dealer. They say it makes the buying process easier. But in reality, the dealers make the ripoff process easier

Test drove a FRS and bought a BRZ. haha

Oh right, totally forgot about Scion's pure pricing strategy. I remember the Scion salesman mentioning that way back when the car came out which felt strange to me even though I was a complete novice when it came to buying the car. But then again, when the FRS/BRZ came out there wasn't much room to haggle to start with. At least with Subaru, I was able to get free accessories and undercoating out of it thanks to my tough negotiating uncle! Well, I'm glad I made the right decision then!

I would've picked the BRZ eventually anyway because I like the upgraded console options (nav, satellite, etc.) but I walked away from the Scion dealership because they didn't have an option with a spoiler and their parts guy said the trunk wouldn't support an aftermarket one (I ordered in July of '12). Useful info, right?
