I think the problem with Michael Righards opinions in that email is that he begins to sound defensive and resentful.

I'm all for embracing our differences, especially with a sense of humor, but the best way to eliminate racism is to stop talking about it.

The thing I posted is an old chain email that was updated around the time of Richards' racist rant. Ignoring the problem won't make it go away any more effectively than it did pre-Civils Rights Act. And even then, we still have major problems with racism. Systems and institutions built on classism, sexism, and racism don't become free of them if the structures that allowed them to exist, still remain.

Man you guys don't understand what he's saying. He isn't saying that we should ignore it, he's saying to truly treat each other as equals and stop making racial differences such a big thing. By calling someone a "black man" or a "white man" it instantly categorizes them into whatever stereotypes it entails. it's not going to magically fix some bigot's opinion but it's a step toward equity that doesn't promote any form of racism or reverse racism where someone gets special recognition purely because of their skin.

I'm not going to speak for anyone else, but believe me: I completely understand what he's saying and it's the reason why I posted that chain letter. Black people have been purposefully excluded and barred from access to resources that whites have had for a long long time. The Civil Rights Act and Supreme Court decisions didn't retroactively adjust those outcomes socially or economically. Hell, even WITH those, we haven't made much progress and actively in the process of rolling them back as if those problems don't exist anymore.

Personally, I'm not even a fan of affirmative action because it's a top-down approach and a convenient way to ignore foundational problems in our institutions, but it's still necessary to increase access within our institutions because "we" want them to remain as they are.

You start out in 1954 by saying, “N*gger, n*gger, n*gger.” By 1968 you can't say “n*gger” — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other.
