Global Time Attack @ Road Atlanta May 9th & 10th.

I'm going to be doing this event and wanted some input on a few things as race day draws closer. I'm going to buy some lighter wheels. Probably go with 17x9" RPF1's since they are so light and I want to run a nice sticky tire but it has to have a tread wear 280 or higher. I like the RE11's but I'm open to suggestions. Also, I want to go with EBC red pads and wanted to know thoughts on those. If its needed I have every suspension bolt on and bushing you can buy and am running stock brakes with Amsoil 500 series dot 3 fluid and goodridge stainless lines with a Grimmspeed MSB. Also looking for camber advice for road Atlanta. Sorry to ask so much but thanks for any input you can provide. Happy Easter!

Are you trying to be competitive and if so what class?

I'm not a fan of EBC Reds at all. 280+ tread wear tires I'm not sure what the best pad would be but nothing too aggressive. I was running Hankook RS3 and Hawk DTC70 and Cobalt XP12 had too much bite so "ICE" mode kicked in a few places. Given you're running maybe a real street tire I'll let someone else guide you with the pad choice but most like Hawk DTC60.

Camber really depends on your suspension and how stiff it is but since you're not running much tire I would think -2.5 is all you need up front and little in the back since it gains negative on compression.

Learning this track is the hardest part if you're not local to Road Atlanta so don't cehang your car too much as you really need to focus on learning this track and not your car.

This will help as its my"enthusiast" winning lap/record from last year's GTA.

Ok, it looks like they changed the tire rule for "enthusiast" this year which is a good thing! Roll off the street and race with the tires you came with is a good move. I would rig up some basic brake ducts. You can use 2.5" hose under the car and zip tied to your tie rods as those tires are going to extend your braking zones. The "track" pads will push a ton of heat into the fluid so make sure you bring extra fluid and your bleed kit just in case.

Come by our trailer if you need some help as we'll be there in our "Unlimited" STi (we may have our FRS but won't race it again until we develop a dry sump). I'll give you whatever tips I can.

What is your current suspension setup?

Thanks,
Phil Grabow

Right now I have Fortune Auto 500 series coilovers with swift springs and 6k-7k spring rates. I also have all of whitelines bushings and their rear lower control arms. I have eibach sway bars with the front set stiff and the rear loose and am in the process of buying some 17x9 Enkei RPF1's (my current wheels are 22lbs a piece) and i'm looking for a good tire for this event. I'm also trying to figure out if I want to just do braided lines and those pads you mentioned or get a front big brake kit. I will defintely look into getting those brake ducts fabbed up ASAP. Thank you very much for the advice!

Also, my car is a bit too low so I plan to raise it a bit and take your advice on the camber settings.

Phil, I was also curious who you run 18's instead of 17's?

Slick selection in 17" is rather limited; guessing that's the reason why.

Uh, that's not going to work.

EBC redstuff are ceramic, and great pads....but not for track use....at all.

If your goal is to not hear stupid questions from female passengers about your brakes making 'noise' or don't want to get a spec of dust on your giant spinning rims, that's when you buy EBC Redstuff pads.

If you're dead set on sticking with EBC, you really need the new Bluestuff race compound, which I don't think they make for our cars yet, so the autocross Yellowstuff would be the next best thing. I haven't tried a full blown race pad on this car yet, but to be competitive in time attack, that's what your going to want...so I'll second the suggestion for Hawk DTC-60's....

Trying to decide between 17x9 rpf1s or for the same price 18x9.5 rpf1s. About 2 lbs difference but does anyone have Amy input on that?

I ran 18s because I would eventually go forced induction and I had a few spare sets of 18s ready to go. For N.A. the 17s will probably allow for better gearing and be quicker.

I think with your limited tire you'll not likely need more than -2.5-3 degrees in the front so start there. Check if your scrubbing to the edge or more at the track and adjust if you need to. The rear is dictated by your ride height so just don't go too low.
